We have a couple of students who want to enter the UK Schools Computer Animation Competition, which is apparently running using the following software:

Alice - keeps crashing.

Scratch - students feel it's limited.

Flash - we only have the Flash reader apparently there is a free month trial of the full version?

Serif Draw Plus - apparently costs £80.

No money in the budget.

Anyone any experience or suggestions on this please.

I looked at entering this last year but they are just too restrictive on the software allowed.

I tried a couple of the suggested apps but they made animation just too tedious even for me with my prodigious levels of patience...year 6 pupils would have been bored within nanoseconds... :)

I think the schools in our area are going to be running their own local competition with a free choice of software...

Thanks for all the very useful answers.

Checking with the Competition organisers they tell me it's only those programmes listed in the OP that are allowed.

I'm trying to find out from the lass what the problem was with Alice.

Looking at Adobe I see 2 things. First there's an online store for Educational use with pretty massive discounts but it seems to be North American only?

Secondly there is a trial version of Flash but nothing about how long the trial period is and I suspect that once signed up it may be a case of frequent sales calls?
