Change from Trapeze to Ruckus

We currently have an a/b/g site wide Trapeze network and are in the process of having a new building built that will require the wireless network to be expanded. As well as getting quotes to expand our exisiting Trapeze network (additional points will be n compatible) we are also considering upgrading the entire network to n while we are at it. Over the past 3 years we have had the Trapeze network we have not had any problems at all, however I have also heard good things about Ruckus aswell so are considering this as an alternative as it will likely be cheaper to do a full change over.

 

We use the wireless network pretty heavily as we have 8 class sets (32) of laptops/netbooks throughout the school used on a daily basis, so need something reliable which, so far, the Trapeze network has.

 

Has anyone had any experience with changing from Trapeze to Ruckus? Has there been any bad experiences with Ruckus or has it been mostly good?

I apprecite this is a requirment for feedback into pottentialy swapping a solution for another which I cant comment on, however I would be more than happy to discuss how Ruckus will fit into your organisation if you did go down this route if you felt that would help.

 

Also I am not sure if you know that Trapeze is now owned by Juniper Networks?

 

Just give me a call if it would help, we have 300 education sites all using Ruckus so have plenty of experience to guide you about the technology.

I did a trial of the Ruckus, replaced an 8 port extricom for about 6 weeks, and it worked a treat. We also trialled Aerohive and have ended up doing a 50 AP deployment of it with plans to put possibly another 30 odd AP's this year with new buildings and uncovered areas.

Just a question...if it isnt broke, why are you trying to fix it? Just expand on the trapeze. I know some (including myself) would recommend ruckus over trapeze, but you have a working system, why tamper with it, just expand as needed.

The main reason I am considering upgrading is the increased speed of wireless n compared with g we are currently using and as the trend seems to be moving more towards increased interent use due to cloud applications we are likely to be using it a lot more. That and as our budget is likely to be severely cut over the next few years we should do the upgrade while there is still the chance we will beable to afford it.

 

As I mentioned the speed increase of wireless n, in a real world full class set of laptops situation has anyone actually noticed the increase in the connection speed compared with g?

I am looking into that aswell, however it will cost about the same to upgrade the existing Trapeze system than it will be to completely replace it with a Ruckus system (and that is before the Ruckus buy back offer which I am still waiting for an idea on what that might be). This is why I asked if anone has had any experience going from Trapeze to Ruckus and if there are any advantages making the change or is it just a case of going from one reliable system to another and there will be no difference when it comes to real world use.

Trapeze are doing a buy back offer at the minute as well. What model of MX controller are you using? I'd be very surprised if it's cheaper to replace the entire network with Ruckus.

To those that asked why I would choose ruckus over trapeze...its simple

 

Much simpler install

Better coverage (atleast in my situation and where I have installed it for others)

Better management console
