tech_guy Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Anyone on here using Open Office instead of MS Office, particularly in secondary? Or using both? Any implications regarding the ICT courses?
capncrunch Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 We are looking at Open Office, currently a couple of IT Teachers are testing it to see if it fits in with the ICT GCSE/BTEC and Functional skills. The only query so far as been the use of Open Office (or Libre Office) database, but it seems they have the nessceary functionality just that it is laid out differently to MS Access or operations are completed in a different order for example input masks and data validation is setup on forms rather than in the table view.
FN-GM Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I would also be interested. Has anyone found anything missing that they need? Thanks
carvjo Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 Home » LibreOffice is excellent and it is nice to have as an alternative to MS Office.. but as MS Office is included in our licensing, I don't really see anyone that keen to move to anything else.. (except the ICT Teachers who would rather tuse Google Docs..)
sacrej Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 we have office 2010 and libre office on our build (was my decision to slip it into our new win7 build at the last minute) not much usage but for the people that know what it is, i'm sure they're greatful. chosen over open office, due to the lack of oracle-ness
FN-GM Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 we also use the GIMP instead of photoshop. We also use Gimp
mac_shinobi Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 (edited) The only thing I noticed from there FAQ ref Calculate ( I think that's the excel equivalent ) was that as of excel 2007 , 2010 and onwards excel allows more rows / cells / columns etc then open office, where as open office seems to be similar to office 2003 in regards to excel as far as I can tell ( could be wrong ) What's the maximum number of rows and cells for a spreadsheet file? - OpenOffice.org Wiki Office 2007 limits Excel FAQ - Excel Application and Files Edited March 7, 2011 by mac_shinobi
Arthur Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Here are the limits in spreadsheet format... http://i.min.us/ij7WeI.png For compatibility reasons, the 64-bit version of Office 2010 has the same maximum number of rows & columns as the 32-bit version. A few readers seem to believe that 64-bit Excel will have more rows or columns than the 32-bit version. While that might be theoretically possible, it’s not true. The maximum rows/columns in Excel is limited by the version of the product, not it’s ‘bitness’. (Source)
Arthur Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 I would have thought so, especially since that limit is per worksheet (and you can have up to 255 of those IIRC).
stickyfoot Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 One of the new features announced for Calc in LibreOffice is that it now goes up to 1 million rows. New Features » LibreOffice
CyberNerd Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 OpenOffice / Google Docs mix here. Again - MSAccess is the only problem in ICT where students need to revert to Access 2000.
