The goal is to backup user data (documents, mails, etc.), MySQL databases. If software is able create system images that will be great. My boss declined my suggestion to keep backups on tape, so we will use a NAS as a storage. Thank you in advance!

dhicks Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 The goal is to backup user data (documents, mails, etc.), MySQL databases. rsync works on Windows, just use that to sync a copy of your server's harddrive to your NAS. If your NAS can't act directly as an rsync server (and some can, e.g. QNAP) then you should still be able to rsync to a simple share on your NAS. .

john Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I'm just looking into backup software for my new tape library and looking like CA's Arcsoft could come out top, its pricing is excellent for everything I get compared to Backup-Exec, I just need to eval the software now and see what happens but it certainly looks worth the money and it works with all the VM stuff on the market directly unlike most others that don't acknowledge Citrix

I always have 2 backup plans in place, I use Backup Exec to Tape then the job duplicate's B2D - Tapes go off-site every week.

caffrey Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 I wrote my own script using rar, and run it using scheduled tasks onto external usb harddrives - one drive per day. Mon-Thurs just backup the essentials (word,excel etc) and fridays is everything as it takes a while to run. (This backs up user homefolders on the server as well as other essential folders) In addition to this i do a baremetal backup for the servers every month onto another usb harddrive. So far so good, even restored files without issues.
KK20 Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 For quick backups just use a large USB drive attached to the server using the normal "windows backup". This is good enough for our usual "help I deleted a file yesterday" restores and may well be good enough for a bare metal restore (it worked when tested). We also backup our servers to an openfiler NAS located in another building using BackupAssist - I use the mailbox and SQL options. Dont forget to TEST your restore - especially a bare metal restore (try using a workstation - a backup solution you choose SHOULD be able to restore to different hardware)
