Internet Explorer in Kiosk mode question

We are looking to create internet explorer-only kiosks, but the problem with using the kiosk switch with iexplore.exe is that it doesn't show the address bar and search box at the top. We are not limiting users of these systems to just one site so they need the search box and address bar to navigate. Anyone have any ideas on how to achieve this?

Kiosk mode isn't really suited to, well, kiosks. It also allows users to quit by pressing Alt+F4 etc...

 

Have you thought about using a linux machine with KDE in kiosk mode, as that is designed specifically for this sort of thing? You can control every aspect of the display then - KDE Developer's Corner - KDE Kiosk Mode

Some of the sites require IE. I had thought of another way to possibly achieve this. By setting IE as the "custom user interface" but without the "-k" switch. And then manually resize the IE window to fill the screen. I was able to prevent users from closing IE or opening files from within IE by using group policy. The only issue is they are still able to minimize the window. I tried looking for something in policy and in the IEAK but had no luck. Anyone no how to prevent access to the minimize button? or better yet, how to hide it completely?

Last time I did anything like this was on XP and I think I set the shell as iexplore instead of explorer. That way they couldn't run anything other than IE and if it was closed, it restarted itself.

I have it setup on a machine at the front of the school - I have done a registry hack so that rather then explorer starting it starts ie - (although i run in kiosk mode) I have restricted everything through local gp and none of the shortcut keys work.

 

All they can do is use IE

Not part of Windows I am afraid, but I have used SiteKiosk software from a german firm before and its a great tool and really good to use, I hope to use it in the future for a internet terminal plan I have in the near future
