New week we are to have a new 2008 server installed, the old (P4) server is still to be kept running but only as a WSUS server and print server and a bit of file storage. Now I have a dual core DELL Optiplex 745 (1Gb ram) PC that I have been given and is spapare at the moment. Any suggestions what to do with it? Install the 2003 server on it, migrate all the printers etc on to it and retire the old server, Install some virtual PC software on it, imagethe new server to a VHD and use it as an emergency backup in case of a nightmare day I had last week when a server would not restart! Or any other suggestion. Just dont want to waste a reasonable spare PC as they dont come around here often!

We have a few hundred if these and I wouldn't use it as a server. They are not the most reliable machines. I wouldn't use it as a production server. Maybe you can put ESXi on and have a few virtual machines and do some testing.

Yes might think about doing that, maybe build up a virtual W7 machine and get an image set up and test software with W7 for when we eventualy move to it. Still XP at moment but moving to server 2008. Is ESXi free do you know and easy to set up?

I have an Optiplex 745 here for exactly that - ESXi installed to put VM's on purely for testing, development, etc. You can actually stick 8GB of memory in them as well (4 x 2GB).

You can't use 8GB on the USSF ones, the most they will take in 4GB.

Do you know that from experience? I just wondered as I went by the Crucial memory configurator which is normally very accurate. (Have to confess I only have 4Gb in mine!)

Yep 100% sure. The other form factors will take 8GB just the ultra small form factor ones that sit on the back of the monitors, they will only take 4GB.

Sorry, thought you were saying that ONLY the USFF ones take 8GB, not the others! In that case I agree, USFF 4GB only but other 745s will take 8GB.

I can't believe I posted in this thread and didn't take chazzy2501's advice.

PS If you'd mined 1 bitcoin you'd have £8,000 right now.
