UAC - Negative points to turning it off?

I've run into an issue that appears to only be solvable by turning off UAC.

 

We're running windows 7 professional 32bit school wide, there are no 64bit machines, what are the negatives aspects to disabling UAC? What functionality could be hammpered?

The only issue I've noticed is that you can't elevate whilst logged in as the standard user.

What issue is it exactly. I've not come across any issues relating to a need to disable UAC. Would be interesting to see if the issue you are getting we have used a workaround for (I have implemented a lot especially with software that says it 'requires' admin permissions)

Webster interactive whiteboard software, it's worked for months up until today, then as of today it's just completely stopped working, i've tried everything i can possibly think of to get it to run and the only two things that work is running it in administrative mode or disabling UAC - see my thread in the "Windows" section for more info on that!

Ah that's likely going to be a deal breaker for me then, as elevation is without a doubt one of my favorite features, especially when it comes to sodding flash player upgrades!

Well i guess it is, but what's got me completely stumped is that nothing has changed between today and last friday, no settings, no policies, i've ruled out every possible eventuality i can think of.

 

I've got a freshly imaged machine in front of me, with an image i made in the summer, not added to the domain, network cable unplugged, webster installed from a pen drive and the same error still occours.....yet it didn't have any problems from july up until today!

I know lots of people have been having strange issues with the updates from last weeks Patch Tuesday - tried just uninstalling the last few and giving it another go?

 

Long shot, but it might be worth a go if you've a machine in front of you to test.

I've just installed windows 7 32bit pro on to a machine, no network cable, completely fresh install and then installed webster....same error!

Could someone test this out on a windows 7 32bit machine with UAC on and tell me if you get the same problem?

Are you sure that's supported on 7? Their release notes were last updated March 2008

 

Tried running it through the Application Compatability Toolkit from Microsoft? That's my usual approach these days.

Well it's been running flawlessly for 6-7 months, then all of them died at once. Anyway, problem solved, it's time-bombed software, polyvision have confirmed this and are currently working on a patch as far as i am aware
