I'm gonna cry, I've got 40 printers being processed using GPP on the Users GPO, but filtered by using targeting so they only get the printer for the room they're logging onto.

 

All well and good, however, processing all those targeting rules for 40 printers is slowing logon. So, I had the idea of creating a GPO per room, and applying the GPP there (so it only has to process one).

 

Great in theory, but as Shared Printer GPP is a User Config setting in GPO, it's ingnored on the Room GPO.

 

I tried enabling Loop Back Processing on the room GPO, but it doesn't seem to work.

 

Anyone got any ideas how to make this quite simple concept actually work? I'm losing the will to live... or print.

That's how i have it set up here, a GPO for each room (each room being within its own OU) within that room's GPO I configure:

 

Computer Configuration (enabled)

System / Group Policy / User Group Policy loopback processing mode 'Enabled' 'Merge'

User Configuration (enabled)

Preferences / Control Panel Settings / Printers {set printer mappings here}

 

Works fine.

Using 2003 R2 or 2008 Print Management you can deploy printers on a per computer basis rather than per user.

Have you also ensured that domain computers are listed in security filtering for the GPO (assuming you've currently got that as a user group rather than authenticated users)?
