University Student Laptop

Got a family member who is a university student ( not for myself ) got £400 at the very most for a laptop.

 

Want to know

 

1. Would said family person could purchase a laptop from on here ( if possible ) - all cash up front.

 

2. What the best make / model of laptop is including cover ie warranty / after sales support etc etc

 

For best make of laptop I have said Lenovo, Samsung or possibly Dell, advised to avoid acer as I know from a number of posts on here as well as other friends who have had issues with Acers support so personally am a bit weary of them.

 

Any advise / thoughts etc

You can buy directly from some of the sellers on here -I have bought laptops/computers for myself (Lenovo) from ICT Direct and CPLtd

As for makes - Tosh do some nice ones and I think they do extended warranty. Both my University-attending sons have Dells - bought from the Dell Outlet at reduced prices

Any chance one of the suppliers at some point ( even if its on monday ) give me a compartive quote ie

 

Dell, Lenovo, Samsung and a HP Pro Book for no more then £400 at max so I can see a spec comparison and also what cover is offered for each laptop.

There is one also on eBay that dell damaged ones. All at very good prices. That is also run by Dell themselves.

I'd give ICT Direct a ring. They often have brand new open-box kit (returns), and £400 can get you an awful lot of laptop from them if they have the right kit in stock.

I see they have some Lenovo T61 ThinkPads with 2Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 80GB HDD, Nvidia Quadro graphics and Vista Business in stock for £250. With the other £150 you can easily whack that up to 4GB and a meaty HD with change for a pint or several and chips on the way home. The ThinkPad series are built to withstand the harshest business punishment and are still very portable, I'd go for that option.

I'd go with the Thinkpad Dosbox suggests from ICT Direct, the decent Probooks are more in the £500 range.
