I've just purchased the new(er) Wi-Spy 2.4i and it's totally awesome.

You can see my B standard AP on channel 11 and all of the cross channel interference it would cause. I was able to see an analog Birdbox cam in science spilling right accross channels 7 to 13. so I now know to move my aps to a lower channel over there.

 

I over paid (£100) you can get it for £65. it's amazingly cheap for what it does.

If you want a simpler version of the same idea on your mobile, there's an Android app available for free - search the market for "Wifi Analyzer"

Anything that does this in software simply finds a wireless channel and draws a curve of the model signal dropoff - they don't measure the actual frequency band like a WiSpy does, and they certainly won't show you anything else on the same frequency that isn't an AP.

 

Very interesting to hear how they've come down in price, I may have to finally get one. Where did you see them cheap?

Why is the Wi-Spy DBx so much more expensive ($599/£450)? :confused: Surely it can't cost an extra £380 just to add support for the 5GHz 802.11a/n frequencies?

OK couldn't find the £65 one again but this one is £69

Suprisingly APs don't really show up unless they're doing real work.

 

As for the price I think alot of it comes down to software features, I can't record any of the patterns, can't even take a screenshot, (I used snipper) it wont record data nor will it auto id devices based on their profile. I can't use it remotely or leave it recoding for 24 hours and time skip. I didn't need those tool and I can't imagine anyone but a serious wifi geek would need them.

Just ordered one from Crownhill Associates who have the i version for £65 (plus £6.50 shipping)

 

Great price... but did you buy with your own money? I was able to justify the cost for my department as a wired equivalent link runner cost close to £400. It just seems useful for the school if I'm able to do more than just ping an ap when they're having wireless issues.

Yeah, I like having my own equipment. I even have my own LinkRunner. We also don't have enough wireless here to justify a business expense.

 

A proper managed wireless system will be on the budget bid (again) this year, and will include a pricier model Wi-Spy for the school.

I borrowed one of these a while ago and can confrim they are a great piece of kit and if the price is now that low, then I'll get my schools to buy one for me.

 

There are extremely useful in seeing what other devices are using parts of the 2.4 ghz spectrum.

Spectrum analasis tools like this are an essential piece of diagnostics kit nowadays.

It exposes the bits that are often missed by other tools that are expressly focused on channelized slots and spot frequencies.

As always it's knowing when to use the right tool for the right job!
