Its now on my order list - I've just finished the Stig Book [ Ben Collins ], now getting through another Bee Keeping book for my sins, then it's the Blair Book [ 3 quid off the Book People ] After that it's a book called 'Delete This at Your Peril' [ as suggest by another Edugeek member ] then I will get to the one you have suggested. I am also trying to sort some free time to start on Mary Cooch's new Moodle book, but I am re-reading the Eye of the world series again as book 14 is out ... then Chris Evans, Gervase Phinn (Head over heels in the dales), the 2nd Bourne trilogy, The Boardgame Remix Kit - new ways to play your favourite board games , the MI5 and MI6 histories ... and dipping in and out of "Sod Calm & Get Angry" I will eventually sort out an "I am reading" bit on my bog ... just never been overly happy with some of the tools that do that.

You can get a second-hand Xbox and mod-chip for around £40-£50 and play games from the following consoles or computers. Sega MegaDrive / MegaCD / MasterSystem / Game Gear Nintendo SNES / NES / N64 / Game Boy Advance / Visual Boy Sony Playstation SNK Neo Geo / Neo Geo CD / Neo Geo Pocket Atari 2600 / 7800 / ST / Lynx Commodore 64 / VIC-20 / PET TurboGrafx-16 (PC Engine) / SuperGrafx MSX/MSX2/MSX2+ Intellivision Amstrad CPC Amiga Apple II ... and many more. I use mine to play SNES and MegaDrive games and it is fantastic. While it would save the taxpayer £1000's it is still illegal. Perhaps you could ask the major companies for special dispensation for Academic Use?

The older I get, the more I find I'm reading more and more - Top Gear is the only thing I tend to watch on the TV, along side some of the Charlie Brooker stuff and documentries. Sports wise its just the F1 and Rugby Union. 24 and Law and Order have finished and nothing from over the pond really catches my eye - so books are on the uptake in my house. I get a blast on the xbox [ when the kids arn't on it ] but thats about it. Counting down the weeks till the end of my 30's now [ less than 10 to go ] I like nothing more than to sit down with either a bottle of wine or a few beers and a good read - next I'll be ordering my pipe, smoking jacket, slippers and rocking chair [ and maybe a nice warm cadigan......]

[and how the games can be pretty much the same every time they release a new one... but people will still buy them due to nostalgia.]

They were the more powerful forces in the British & European cultural landscape, consoles were more USA / Japan for the early influence. Key reading (for everyone, not just on the course): Replay: the History of Video Games: Amazon.co.uk: Tristan Donovan: Books - amazing book. For my tuppence, you'd need: * Nintendo & Sega 8 bit consoles, with Marios & Sonics, Mario Kart and Pilotwings to show off the Mode 7 stuff (pseudo-3D in a 2D engine - look it up, it's genius) * N64 with Mario 64 & Goldeneye as first 3D platformer & successful console FPS * PS1 with Wipeout and Tomb Raider as first culturally-acceptable console, at least in the UK * Dreamcast as first online console and to show off the madness & genius of the VMUs, with Shen Mue, Chu Chu Rocket (first online), maybe Crazy Taxi & JetSetRadio * PS2 as most successful console ever * Wii as first example of a standardised motion control - seem to be all the rage now, eh? * One off 360/PS3 to show modern AAA development - 360 cheaper still I think, and you can get a Kinect then which is the more insane of the motion controls. For handhelds you probably just want every Gameboy ever, they can't cost much (although you only really need the Breezeblock), the DS (to show how a new interface can unleash creative solutions - no-one asked for the touchscreen, but when they got it, look at the games that came out) and the Game Gear perhaps. And don't forget to go to Bradford for the National Media Museum - they have a video games section there now with all the original arcade machines for Space Invaders, Gauntlet, Centipede, Defender... really awesome exhibition.

Seriously? That got like, 7% in Amiga Power back in the day. Yer only in it fer the shiny graphics!

LosOjos Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Not a console game, but one that I think deserves an honourable mention (if for nothing else than to make a direct comparison to CoD) is Delta Force. I spent hours playing that, it was the first thing I ever played online and I absolutely loved it - still do play it occasionally!
