bollo318 Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Hi All I've been looking into the use of Youtube and Youtube videos wihin school. I'm finding it to be such a minefield with copyright etc. What I want to know is if teachers can use videos from youtube to show to their students for educational purposes. Does anybody know if we can do this? Is it illegal? I'm truly getting frustrated with this topic and I keep finding differing opinions. Your help and experience would be greatly appreciated
CESIL Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 The problem is solved here as out LEA block all access to YouTube in primary schools... I recommend teachers to use TeacherTube instead as the resources on there have been posted by teachers...copyright seems to have been dealt with by the publishers.

AngryTechnician Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 I'm pretty sure that just showing the video live from the site in class does not violate any copyright, unless the entire video is infringing (in which case it shouldn't even be on YouTube). Downloading the videos does violate YouTube's terms of service, however. 1
Arthur Posted January 24, 2011 Posted January 24, 2011 Streaming videos directly from YouTube should be fine in terms of copyright (as AT said above). If your teacher's use PowerPoint as much as ours do, you may want to install YouTube Video Wizard. This add-in enables you to insert YouTube videos into PowerPoint slides which are then streamed from YouTube (instead of being downloaded) so you shouldn't get into trouble with the copyright police.

SWGfL block youtube. I don't want to unfilter the whole site for the whole site cos that is just a risk. After discussions with the office staff, we've decided that the teachers shouldn't gain access to the staff proxy. And as Arthur says, we can't download the videos? Am I asking an impossible question? Am I just going to have to open the proxy!?

I saw several companies at BETT selling systems that let teachers mark particular YouTube videos as okay for pupils to access and blocked the rest. They tended to be quite pricy, though. I figured it couldn't be that hard to write a system that basically consists of a list of approved YouTube URLs, so I'm having a look at writing one as a Squid url_rewrite_program script. I've got a Squid server installed and acting as a transparent proxy (although, as always, the tricky part is getting iptables rules set up so traffic all goes to the right places), I've just got to do a spot of programming. -- David Hicks

Singist Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 We use a youtube media filter supplied by Bloxx Internet filtering software. It uses AD so easy to add users from all our primaries in our LA. Users browse to it via the web, log in, submit and approve their videos then watch them via the application on the web. Brilliant!!!
Bashir Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Our schools and college use the educational video library, it came as part of our content filter (Lightspeed), and I dont believe there was an additional cost involved, its just part of the filtering system. 1
