witch Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 So..went to BETT to get some final ideas about netbooks - was pretty much set on the Samsung netbooks. And then I saw the HPs and the RMs which are ruggedised and have handles!! Has anyone got the HPs? They really appeal to me as the children would be able to carry them without dropping them (hopefully). Someone said something about some driver issues? Has anyone any experience of the HPs or RMs?

synaesthesia Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 I've built a lot of the RM netbooks and was quite impressed with the speed of them. They've been running since September in the hands of primary school children and staff alike, running windows 7 and CC4. Performance is, quite surprisingly, rather good. Keyboard size was a far cry from the first batch of calculator keyed netbooks, and the screens were clear, yet lower resolution than some I've seen. I can't however remember the price in comparison to other machines. Bought a Samsung model of some description a couple of weeks ago as a standalone go-between for a headteacher - he loves it, I certainly liked it - screen seemed excellent for the size especially. No experience of HP netbooks though.
elsiegee40 Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 I was particularly impressed by the spill-proof, pick resistant keyboard and touch pad and loved the handle as it makes portability with small children more practical. The HP trolley is too heavy though... Get a different brand of trolley.
Tricky_Dicky Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 I loved the look of those HP laptops, especially for the younger years as it has the handle. Although the trolley was heavy it looked really nice, well built and had the networking all built in. I know the trolley won't be available for a little while though as the people we were speaking to made that quite clear. Not sure on when the laptops are due.

I was quite impressed, too - I actually liked the resistive touch screen as it meant you could rest your hand on the screen and use the stylus to handwrite properly. The best option for charging I saw was a company (can't remember the name, they were just along from Fizzbook's stall) that did multi-slot battery chargers for a selection of different laptop models. -- David Hicks

witch Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 Don't confuse the issue! I don't want swivel touchscreen beasts - but if I wave those under my bosses nose he will faint with excitement. They are a bit pricy for us though and stylus use is a no-no for primary schools. Don't get me on to the trolley issue - they ALL seem very heavy and unmanoeverable to me!

AngryTechnician Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 I don't know about Samsung's latest netbooks, but the incredibly popular NC-10s cannot take any kind of rough treatment. We had repeated problems with keyboards, screens, and power buttons, and to top it all off they have a single screwpost holding the hard disk in which is prone to snapping off because the case plastic is too flimsy.
