penfold Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Anyone else read this Swansea teacher sacked after taking pupils sledging. Seems a bit extreme to me and just highlights how stupid health and safety has become. I assume there must be more going on than is reported...
webman Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 He was cleared of five charges, including that there was no risk assement, there was no parental consent and health and safety guidelines were not followed. That looks like he was cleared on the H&S issue (whichever one that was).
sparkeh Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 The report I heard on the radio said that staff were explicitly told by the Head not to do it, as he was going out colleagues told him not to do it and when asked by the Head he lied and said he hadn't done it. But we all prefer a good H&S story don't we
FN-GM Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 its just stupid to me. I dont think they should get sacked. Infact we need more teachers like him. They obviously love the job they do!

Mmm I agree that the original mandate not to do it was stupid but given that it was in place and that he ignored a direction from his boss, then lied about it (if the reports about the case are correct), it is a serious offence (in the context of the the job).

witch Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 No, there were 9 charges and the H & S ones were dismissed by the tribunal
penfold Posted January 12, 2011 Author Posted January 12, 2011 No, there were 9 charges and the H & S ones were dismissed by the tribunal Fair enough, still seems odd to me, and I cant help think it was just the excuse they were looking for to get rid of him. I think it was stupid not to allow sledging but then I think there are lots of things that seems stupid to ban kids from doing. Mods: You might want to lock this thread as I think there are 2 going on.
