Removing Address Toolbar from My Computer / Explorer

I need to remove the address toolbar from Windows Explorer / My Computer (Not IE) via Group Policy, I cannot find a setting in the XP SP2 policies?

Has anyone created a custom one to perform this task?

I suspect he is using some form of classroom control software to block IE - then found that the kids can simply type in a web address into My Computer and get to the t'Internet anyway!! That is the trouble I am having anyway!!!

Yes Andy, that is my problem also !!

 

I am using Lanview IAM from MST (my version stops Inet access from IE but you can bypass by typing a url into explorer address bar) a new version was made available but it has a problem with XP SP2) see Lanview website.

 

Changing the client configuration to remove the address bar means I need to visit every client PC - thats why I asked the question.

I'm using Lanview as well, and I'd thought the same thing. When you visit the client PC, what do you do to stop the address bar?

Do you use a mandatory profile for the students? Default User on netlogon? roaming profiles?

 

For a mandatory profile, change it to a roaming profile tempory, login as an admin, remove the address bar & lock the toolbars, log out, change it back to a mandatory profile and hey presto! Similar applies to the default user, just make the changes then copy then overwrite the default user.

 

For existing roaming profiles youll need a login script to update the

registry for the status bar bits - no idea what the entries are but its doable. Try using a registry tracker and run through it as admin to see the changes.

Frazer - thanks, I use mandatory profiles here, but do not have the default user in netlogon.

 

I know how to remove the address bar on a client, but to save time and effort was looking to do it via Group Policy

You could use a tool like regmon to monitor the registery while you change the setting and narrow down which registry key is involved. Once you have that you should be able to create a ADM template to manage the setting via GPO's.

If you cant view that basically you could use a login script to have 2 different folder.htt templates one for admin and one for students and make a login script check who is logged in to apply the different folder.htt templates.

 

Probably a long way around as you would have to make one copy of the folder.htt with the address bar disabled and another copy of it when it is enabled.

I think there are lots of long ways around this, but go direct. I tried the GPO way, and couldn't seem to find an ADM template to do it- although I suppose you could make one (long way again for those of us without special skills). Simply, I would either edit it and save the changes to your mandatory profile, or find out which reg key it is using and lock that down in a script at startup.
