web version of AD

i was at another college the other week who have a web version of AD installed, i can see a good use on my network for this. but person who set it up has left that college and no one knows how it was set up, i am wondering if anyone else has it, so my quetion is how do you do it? or was it a 3rd party piece of software

Sandwell used to use something like this with there primaries. I think it was an in house thing though not something comercially available

Are you talking about administration tools?

It was a web front end for AD. It was very basc but ideal for primary schools who needed to add the odd user or machine. Also yu could manage groups.printers etc

You can do a similar thing with MMCs and taskpads. Simplifies it a bit. ANyway bed time

Viglen Classlink XP uses a web interface for its AD management.

yes i was taking about the AD user and computers tools, they are able to reset passwords and enable accounts and stuff

I just did a google search for 'web front end for active directory' and came up with a couple of possible commercial products:

Yes ... all of this can be done through the Management section of IIS if you have it running on a DC.

 

For most people the idea of running IIS on a DC is scary as historically you had to spend time hardening the server, panicing everytime there was a new patch and checking the logs to see if people had tried to break it.

 

It is far easier to do it in taskpanes or via RDC.

 

Now ... the web front end in Server 2003 is quite robust ... you can set up self0signed certificates to run it over https and generally have an easy life ...

 

We don't do it here are we have the adminpak loaded on the loacal machines of the techies ... but Technet would be the best place to look.

 

Or if you like scripting you can build your own ... and I would recommend Thomas Eck's ADSI Scripting for Windows 2000 server as a good place to start.

Doesn't RM CC3 run a custom web-based AD front end?

enabling terminal services administration then access it through a web browser normally http://servername/tsweb

 

or if you run xp, use the RDC tool installed by default. It achieves the same thing without some 'commercial tool' with a crappy interface.
