As the title says, ordering a new server.

All desktops will be Win7, and laptops are WinXp clients.

Is R2, the server OS to get, as opposed to just 2008?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes you want R2 to manage Windows 7 clients successfully: ) and if you have a problem with R2 and compatibility with software, EG your MIS, you can downgrade to 2008 just like Windows 7 Pro Licences to XP Pro

does depend on whether you work in a school and are on a schools agreement - if you are then you just need any os and can upgrade to the latest version of windows

so if its more expensive to buy an R2 license then work out how you are licensed you might not need it.

What type of compatibility issues are you referring to? Typically it's just a DNS/DHCP/File server. No real software really runs on it.

This is not for a school.

R2 is fine then, schools MIS software, such as SIMS and Serco are not currently supported on 2008 R2 so you need to use 2008 for those.

For what you have said 2008 R2 will be fine :)
