itgeek Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Hi we currently use local storage on Dell 2950 vmware esxi. Could anybody recommend a san? Thanks
Guest Guest Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 (edited) Space requirements? IOPs? Interface - nfs/iscsi/etc? Budget? Extra features; high availibilty, intergration into vmware, dedupe, etc? There are people on here who have built tehre own with debian and openfiler. Provided high availibility with DRBD... and there are also people who have Sun kit with flash storage for high performance. Edited December 20, 2010 by Guest
itgeek Posted December 20, 2010 Author Posted December 20, 2010 Ok so iscsi san, storage 2tb, budget 4K, was just looking for hyper v for costing issue and the ha vmotion etc etc Thanks
glennda Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 I use a Fiber channel MSA 2000 using an Oracle file system running on ubuntu using KVM for virtulization. we run aprox 20 servers across 3 hosts. but it all does depend on why servers you are going to be running sql? exchange? file servers etc?
EduTech Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Have you considered speaking to Phill @ Oracle Who is a Storage Specialist for Oracle/Sun Microsystems? The hardware they provide is outstanding and ticks all the right boxes for a virtualised environment. Drop him a PM his username on here is: Hebdenlad Also, Speak with the Cutter Project both Andy and Kim are on there forums whom i'm sure will be able to advise you also. They are VDI Specialists and use Oracle Storage on a Daily Basis so i'm sure will be able to give you some pointers if you want to look at going down that route. It's a bit pricey compared to other brands don't get me wrong, but i've not heard of any complaints regarding the kit, i've used it myself and love it! If you want to have a play with the Interface download the Simulator here: Sun Unified Storage | Flash Optimized Storage | Oracle < where you can download the Open Storage Simulator James. 2
linescanner Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 (edited) Looking at size and budget required, I would suggest the Oracle stuff is overkill and too expensive. @itgeek, rough baseline costing for the 7120 12TB unit is £16000 approx Edited December 21, 2010 by linescanner rubbish typing
itgeek Posted December 21, 2010 Author Posted December 21, 2010 What would you recommend linescanner? Thanks
Duke Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 What would you recommend linescanner? Have you checked out the Dell stuff, particularly the EMC models they resell? I'm an Oracle/Sun user too and the stuff is awesome, but if you're looking at 2TB/£4k then I think Andy's right about it being overkill. PowerVault Network Data Storage Solutions | Dell UK If you're just doing ESXi then you can go iSCSI and get a dedicated SAN (no NFS, CIFS, i.e. 'NAS' requirements) which should save some money. j17sparky is right about working out your IOPS requirements and basing your disk and RAID types on this.
