running smoothwall express 3 may be hit & miss depending on hardware compatibility, but SWE should run fine within esxi (however i haven't tested it)

Would this server be considered a bit lightweight for a primary school curriculum server (with extra storage and memory added)? Nothing special being run. just internet access, some apps from server shares and pupils logging on (probably only 40 at any one time). Just need to sort one out for one of the schools in Jan to replace a P4 server with not alot of room left on its primary partition, well not alot left anywhere to be honest!

The thing that lets this server down in the processor. Maybe if you get a few and slit the load you would be ok. But i would get some better hardware.

 

By the way does anyone know if it supports visualization?

Great little thing for running Windows Home Server on. The missus won't be happy tho

I think it will be a little bit underpowered to be honest. HP recommend it for up to 10 users, and as you'd be using it for apps, logins and internet, this will be too much IMO.

If you mean virtualisation, yes it does - as someone else mentioned, it can run ESXi at least.

We are getting one of these for our IT Club/6th form work - it uses a simlar processor to my laptop (Athlon Neo 1.6ghz Dual Core) and its more than enough to handle running multiple VMs in Virtual Box and Hyper-V.

the current model at the time of the original post has been discontinued, but they are bringing out another one with a lower spec PSU and a 250gb HDD (according to techhead.co.uk). I'd imagine that the part code will be different as well which means that you wouldn't get the £100 cashback unless HP change the promotion details.

ordered one through Insight, from what I can make out it was the last one in the country! Thanks for the pointer there Theblacksheep.

 

My intentions are to install esxi on it, upgrade the ram to 8Gb and install a second 250Gb hard drive configured as Raid 1.

 

I plan to use it as a home server and a testbed for new OS releases and anything else I wish to experiment with!
