Sounds similar to P2V which I have used. Boot the cd then on the vm server suck the image across.

Its also possible to convert dd images made from:

 dd if=/dev/hda of=/home/filename.img 

or ghost4linux using this service:

http://www.bschatz.org/servlet/dd2vmdk/dd2vmdk.html (I've not tried it)

also vmware can import ghost v2i images.

just used VM ware converter to create a vm machine out of my physical machine (lappy) it took just over an hour but i now have a very good backup and it works very well, (so much so thatwhen i booted vmware and started the image it told me i hada duplicate machine name on my network , brilliant.)

I tried converter on a 2003 server and it wouldn't boot.

ah i used it as a test on a windows 2003 terminal server it worked great, two weeks later that server when pair shaped (citrix bust it! when i ried to uninstall citrix with the service disabled) and so i used the virtual one in place of it, absolutely priceless as it was our home school link up, so i am obviously a massive fan of it now.

I've just spent the day using this to convert a Parallels VM to VMWare. Smal and simple to use. I like.

For those who have been wondering, you can convert a running (with users) SIMS Server to a vm for testing purposes using this tool.

 

Took about an hour and worked beautifully.

 

Suffice to say, I'm amazed nothing broke and now keep looking upwards for falling pianos.
