[android] Android / HTC Desire 'forgot' update

Got a bit of a strange (and irritating) problem with my Desire at the minute, wondered if anybody else has had it.

 

A couple of days ago, a message popped up to tell me there was a system update available for my phone. I chose not to install it as I wasn't in range of a WiFi point. Now, when I try scanning for updates, it says there aren't any!

 

Anyone else had this happen?

It was an O/S update from Vodaphone I believe.

 

Have you tried Menu Settings. About phone. System software updates. Check now. ?

Yep, I'm not aware of any other way to check for updates, is there another way?

 

And it's not Vodafone specific as I'm on T-Mobile, don't know what it was to be honest, was busy at the time so I just denied it thinking I'd be able to get it later on, no such luck so far.

Pretty sure the update that popped up on mine was to 2.33.something too (I'm on 2.10.blah at the minute). Oh well, I think I'm gonna flash it with cyanogen anyway over the weekend

That sounds like the one I got. I didn't really find out what it did, nothing spectacular.

Do you have any PC software that you can connect it to?? I had a vodafone update recently (I have a Sony Ericsson X10) and in order to get the update I had to connect to my PC and use the update software from Sony Ericsson's website. You may have something similar for the HTC.

This should work if there is an update to download. I had one about 3 weeks ago (Desire/Vodafone) which was bug fixes and to improve 720p video recording.

can you download the update from the htc website? Thats what I did for my hero

Not sure about doing this, too worried I might brick it or I might have to send it in for repair in the future.

Its faster, more reliable and fuller featured than the stock ROM with sense.

 

For instance mine went from having 16mb remaining in system memory to 38mb when I'd readded all my apps. and general responsiveness is vastly improved

 

new feature include lock screen gesture actions, camera with continuous focus/stabilisation and adding the power control widget to the home screen drop down (which I've found very handy)

And of course, running cyanogenmod, there will be a Gingerbread build out long before the various UK networks get round to releasing their version.

Proabably missed that as I rarely use the camera and never lock the screen.

One question - are UK phones still GSM or are they CDMA? There are two versions for Desire and I don't know which I should use

The update that came out the other day was a pre 2.3 patch to fix a few issues and get the platform ready for 2.3

How do I go about flashing cyanogen onto my phone if I have never done it before?

 

at the moment its an up to date HTC Desire on Vodafone

 

Ive read lots of things about making sure you have the right recovery menu and making sure you use the right radio file.

At the moment I must admit it looks confusing and im worried I will break it.

I'll admit I had a hiccup on the way through with mine, probably my fault - but once you've rooted and installed Clockworkmod its easy to do a full wipe and then install the modded firmware from a file on the sd card (listed as the second method in the instructions)

What radio file should I use with my phone - the one in the wiki or is there a more up to date one?

Domino will be able to answer better than me no doubt, but I do know that you won't get anything but a stock ROM with Sense as it's made by HTC, although there are lots of alternatives (I hear OpenHome is good) available on the market place.

 

To return to stock ROM, you just download it and flash it I believe (I did this to remove T-Mobile branding from mine and am currently using HTC stock)

 

I'm interested in the radio query too as I'm clueless on that one

1. backup before you change ROMs

2. check the cyanogen website, the latest and greatest are always there

3.I'm sure there's a cracked sense install available, xda forums would be a good bet
