3D Projectors

Anybody had any luck with the 3D projectors yet - the prices seem reasonable for home use but I'd like to install one into our lecture theatre here in school.

 

Anybody recommend any models to buy / avoid.

 

After speaking to a representative from Sky today they have said that 3D projectors are not supported by Sky 3D but I don't see how this could be the case - any ideas?

We have a 3D cinema in our lecture theatre, main problem is the format of the source video.

 

Sky 3D effectively show a video which is at high frequency, showing left eye then right eye then left eye, etc etc... to view this you need glasses which are in sync with this, blanking each eye as required.

 

The method our projector uses, and also cinema's is that both left and right eye are shown at the same time but with a polarised filter on it.

 

The first solution requires expensive glasses, the last cheap glasses, which is why Schools are recommended to use the polarised method. Now the interesting bit, 3D blu ray have followed Sky's route, so 3D bluray disks do not work either.

For projection there are two types of 3D; active and passive.

 

Active uses the expensive glasses this is a single source image (one projector) and the processing is done at the source and in the glasses.

 

Passive uses the cheap glasses this uses two projectors and the processing is done with polarised lenses.

 

Active is the type used at most exhibition demo's as this really allows images to float in mid air in front of you, passive gives you the depth of field but is not as good at making things 'come out' of the screen.

 

I have to say that Dageezah is correct at the moment content is the biggest issue there really isnt alot.

 

I would recommend if you want to fit a hall projector use a DLP projector with a 3D enabled chip and then ensure you have the ability to upgrade this further down the line if you so wish.

We use Digital Projection 3D projectors for a "Portable" 3D system:

and a Sony 4k Cinema projector per eye in our fixed 3D systems, we use active shuttering for both.

You just need a 3D demultiplexer that takes the source viedo and splits odd and even frames to the two different projectors. It will need to work with the source output so HDMI 1.4 but devices that do this do exist.

The linked one that I found does not support HDMI but ones that do probably exist somewhere. You can also re-encode BlueRay media to two video streams but that involves cracking the encryption which is not overly legal so not recommended 3D BD: demux to left-right videos - Doom9's Forum
