Australia - 2 weeks in April - Suggestions Please!

All being well, I'll get a fortnight In Australia at Easter with the family (teenagers).

 

OH is based in Sydney but will be taking annual leave, 2 weeks isn't long and April in Australia is the equivalent of October in the UK (though the weather's probably better)...

 

... So much to see, so little time... suggestions gratefully received on what we shouldn't miss :)

2 weeks will go dead quick. It will take you a few days to get over the Jetlag.

 

The obvious things not to miss in Sydney is the Opera House, myself i was disappointed by the tour inside but its having a look outside and stuff is really good.

The bridge is good, you can walk over the top of it if thats your kind of thing.

Bondi beach is another.

 

I assume you want to stay in the Sydney area?

The Bridge might suit the family, but you won't catch me going over the top of it ... that's far too high for me! :scared:

 

The exchange rate isn't great - it's making things rather expensive, but OH's company are paying the air fares out there which helps.

 

We're not thinking of staying exclusively in NSW, but the distances are so vast that it would be handy to know what's unmissable and doable on what's likely to be my only visit down under for some considerable time!

Check out this website - Courier Services | Express Parcel Delivery Company | Parcel2Go - you can sent some stuff to Oz with FedEx cheaper than Royal Mail

 

Something i have found in oz is Domestic Air fares are pretty cheap. The Gold Coast and the Sunshine coast is a good visit. You can get flights with JetStar from Sydney Airport to the Cold Coast Airport at good rates. Up in Queensland is different to Sydney its more tropical so that might be worth a visit. You could also visit Brisbane and go to Australia Zoo and stuff around there. Myself i love Brisbane!

If you can make it to Victoria....Get yourself to Melbourne!

 

I love it, there, and spent a couple of weeks there, 3 years ago. The MCG is a fantastic place to visit. Even my OH enjoyed wandering around this impressive stadium.....But, that may not be your thing! Therefore....the Healesville sanctuary, although quite a way out of Melbourne, is worth a visit too!

 

I would love to have gone to Uluru, and Alice Springs, as well as Coober Pedy.

 

Make sure you plan what you wanna do, as the time will fly by, and before you know it....you're on your way home!

 

EDIT* Though some people don't like the idea of a planned, almost regimented, visit it is worth considering so that you see all that you want to! It's a long way to go, to come back thinking "Oh...I wish I'd gone there!"

 

Also, don't be too worried about jet-lag....You may find that it doesn't affect you too badly....or you may find it's a horror. But whichever it is....try to make the most of each and every hour! And get in with the locals, because they are brilliant people!!!!

OH has got a ticket for the one day international in Melbourne...lucky s*d

 

I'm all for planning this trip. It's not like I'll get the chance to repeat it in a hurry and with so much to see and do, I want to make the most of it!

If you are headed to Melbourne - not sure how much of a gambling person you are, but went to the Crown Casino when I was in Oz, loved it !!

 

Or should I say Pokies !!

 

Not with a 15 year old in tow! :D

see if you can get some cheap flights and fly up to Cairns / Port Douglas up the north of Queensland. Took my dad and sister up there about Easter time a few years ago and it was still really hot. Theres rainforest, awesome beaches, and your right by the Barrier reef where you can snorkel etc in turqioise water and white sands..

Bridge Climb in Sydney is a must - did that with the OH few years back and was an amazing experience! View was breath taking.

 

They have a good aquarium in sydney as well which is good to see if you arent going to make it to the barrier reef.

"really hot" sounds very appealing, especially at the moment! :D

If it was me I would spend a week in Sydney and then go up north into QLD. If you plan what you are doing you can fit a lot into a day. Don't waste your time with the Gold Coast - its just a beach! Cairns/Port douglas is spectactular and that time of year is perfect to see it. I would contact Tourism Australia and get some info from them and plan your time based on the things you like.
