mattx Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Just wondering if any schools block twitter ? If so - why ?
gmj Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Blocked here on orders from Leadership....along with Facebook and all other 'Social Networking' sites. The media staff keep on about wanting it unblocked for the students to use though.
mattx Posted November 29, 2010 Author Posted November 29, 2010 Thanks for the info - same thoughts as me when it comes to the social networking aspect but not sure how to address this as if it's a social network site or not !!
bladedanny Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 The YHGfL block it here apart from the Sheffield council twitter page.
Max_Power Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 We have all things like that blocked for students - however twitter is permited for the communications dept as they regularly tweet about events etc as parents felt it would be a good source of information when asked in a survey. To be fair we actually have quite alot of followers. Quite amazed how many parents would rather check twitter to find out schools closed for a snow day than to recieve an email or check school website. R
localzuk Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Its unblocked here, and no-one except me seems to use it at all...
SimpleSi Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Blocked by CLEO but one of my schools has a twitter feed that's updated by ICT Co-ordinator via her IPhone and that parents subscribe to. regards Simon
tech_guy Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 (edited) Blocked here for students, is allowed for admin staff but not for teachers. Teachers are allowed access to Facebork though. Work that one out! EDIT: Just found out that http://twitter.com is blocked but that https://twitter.com isn't.... Edited November 29, 2010 by tech_guy
elsiegee40 Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Blocked to keep the little darlings on task - and that's just the teachers!
GrumbleDook Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Blocked for student levels and allowed for staff / adult user levels within EMBC. It is a fantastic tool for CPD for staff, as well as for classwork too (just do a search for Twitter and gunpowder plot for an example). However, it is like all tools ... it needs to be used appropriately.
JJonas Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Blocked here but we have a relaxed filtering group that has access to this and youtube - for media students. Twitter is fantastic for a breaking news story. I remember during the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake following the hash tags #quake and #Haiti Very interesting way to follow a breaking new story. #wikileaks is very busy this morning.
tech_guy Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 ...... However, it is like all tools ... it needs to be used appropriately. [Tries to stifle a childish laugh and fails] 1
rad Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 @Mattx - its blocked here, do you not use the Grid for internet?
mattx Posted November 29, 2010 Author Posted November 29, 2010 @Mattx - its blocked here, do you not use the Grid for internet? No, private school so we have our own setup..... [ more work for me I'm afraid !! ]
CAM Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 LGfL, one rule for all filtering from the LA. Blocked as Social Networking. Makes me chuckle when educational companies declare "Follow our Twitter for live coverage of x event!" even though it's likely to be blocked in schools.
