ajames Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Guys, I am looking for some information regarding bypassing proxy servers, i use my laptop in work and at home and find it really irritating to enter the proxy details when i log onto the school network, and then have to take them out when i connect to the internet at home. Also its annoying to have to remove the proxy address to access local ip for printers, switches, routers and wireless etc, as this can be a slow process waiting for pages to load, and not being able to use the internet in a separate tab at the same time while waiting. Under the proxy tab is the box - Bypass proxy settings for these hosts and domains, now i have on many occasions entered local ip's and home ip's in there but it never works, firstly is that whats is for, or is there another way to do what i want. I do not want to access sites that the council are banning, just want to remove the necessity to add and remove the settings when trying to work locally and from home. Any help would be appreciated.
mavhc Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Should set something like 10.*,192.168.* etc to the bypass. To make it automatic use wpad and pac files, then just turn on automatic proxy and it uses a proxy at work, but not at home. Great for when the teachers take their laptops home. Requires a local http server
Brpilot99 Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 How about proxypal? It resides on your IE taskbar and will enable or disable the proxy settings with a single click .....
User3204 Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Firefox : It allows you to have two profiles, one for school and one for home. Or just use Firefox at home and IE at school.
nile_c Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 I'm partial to FoxyProxy on Firefox. It lets you have multiple proxies configured and switch between them via a widget in the Status bar (amongst other features). Obviously this only helps with "web", not your general networking.
ind1ekid Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 Vote here for Proxy Switchy! extension if you use Chrome. Works a treat.
Cools Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 (edited) im with LeMarchand i use a .pac file. saves all sorts of problems.. for me and staff.. and set it via GPO. Mine looks like: function FindProxyForURL(url, host) { if (isPlainHostName(host)) return "DIRECT"; // our local URLs from the domains below example.com don't need a proxy: if (shExpMatch(url,"*.YOURDOMAIN.local/*")) {return "DIRECT";} if (shExpMatch(url, "*.YOURDOMAIN.local:*/*")) {return "DIRECT";} // bypass proxy for local WWW servers if (isInNet(host, "10.0.0.0", "255.0.0.0")) { return "DIRECT"; } // All requests go through port 80 of proxy.example.com. // should that fail to respond, go directly to the WWW: (DIRECT is disabled here Can only use proxy) return "PROXY 10.11.80.9:8080"; } if the staff go home an use there pc it will not find the .pac file so it will directly access the WEB at home. and reaply only back at school Edited November 25, 2010 by Cools
ajames Posted November 26, 2010 Author Posted November 26, 2010 Thanks for the replys, but what i should of metioned is i'm using a macbook air running safari, are there any solutions for that.
mavhc Posted December 10, 2010 Posted December 10, 2010 put a pac file on an internal web server at work twice (either 2 copies or a link), proxy.pac, and wpad.dat Then add a CNAME on your dns server called wpad, pointing at the web server. Set browsers to auto detect settings, should work on any OS/browser
