I'm not sure if what I want even exists - but if it doesn't, it should!

 

Can you get a thingy that plugs into the headphones socket of a laptop (running a presentation in assembly, for example), that transmits the sound so that it can be picked up by a VHF or UHF radio mic reciever? it would save us an awfully long, noisy, usually knotted jack plug extension cable if you could....

 

Has anyone ever tried this with something like a guitar wireless system? Wonder if that'd do the job??? (runs off to find music teacher)

I think your problem would be the frequency of the receiver - unless you plugged an FM radio tuner in to the amp at the other end?

That could work... depends how much interference would creep in - that's why I was thinking more radio-mic frequency...

I think the idea is to get the sound from the laptop to the speakers so a variable frequency transmitter with an FM tuner should do it, just make sure you don’t transmit on somebody else’s frequency.

You want to look at 'wireless instrument systems'. The 'belt pack' usually has a simple jack socket on it, which you plug your instrument into (usually a guitar or the like).

The radio guitar pack is probably the "right" way to do this. Audio level matching might be an issue, but a simple resistive pad would work.

 

The car things are rubbish even at the distances involved in small family cars. The Sky type senders might work, but I've no experience of them.

Another vote for the AV sender. You can get them for around £25. As long as there isn't a microwave oven close by.

The best way to do this (having done it myself) is to use the guitar packs or instrument packs and basically, either use an adaptor on the 1/4" Jack or get your soldering iron our .. I've even bodged a headset mic pack before now, as they are the same thing, it's just that they come with different ends ..

 

Pretty straight forward really, plus if you get one with a mic, you have a spare radio mic should you ever need it too ..

Get yourself a pair of these 5.8GHz Wireless AV Audio Video Sender Transmitter on eBay (end time 26-Dec-10 16:27:18 GMT)

 

They work brilliantly. Big advantage over using the packs designed for instruments or radio mics is you keep a stereo signal.

What about an AirPort Express + AirFoil, Air UPnP, Foobar2000, WinAmp, JustePort or iTunes? You just connect some speakers to the AirPort Express and then stream the audio from a PC or Mac over WiFi.
