Printing issues - Win7

We have some 64 bit Win7 machines now and our print server is 2003. We dont have the printers mapped automatically at logon, we let the pupils add the printers manually. Our problem is that everytime a student add's a printer it is requiring administrator logins to install. This is everytime a pupil logs onto a new machine.

 

I have looked around and found a thread on these boards which talks about some GP settings;

 

User Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Control Panel -> Printers : Point and Print Restrictions

 

Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Printers : Point and Print Restrictions

 

but these are for 2008 not 2003 so i wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction?

 

In 2003 there is an option for point and print in;

 

User config -> admin templates -> control panel -> printers -> point and print restrictions

 

I am a little bit lost and a day of googling hasnt really produced too many worth while answers......

edit: quick edit to say i have all the 64 bit drivers we need installed as additional drivers on the 2003 print server, the printing works fine once an administrator has put in the details to allow the driver to install. I know that the reason the driver doesnt automatically install is due to group policy settings restricting pupils from installing any software but without turning this off (which isnt really an option) is there a way around this?

Why don't you assign the printers at Logon?

If assigning printers at logon will also push out the driver stopping the dialogue box opening up then that can be how we do it for the suite with Win7 installed. If that is the best way around the problem then i'll get onto it Edited November 22, 2010 by RTFM

If you do, do that then it is worth disabling Point and Print Restrictions otherwise you will get a message asking you to install the printer drivers on logon.

You can add these IDs into the following policy in Windows Vista PC (include the brackets):

 

Local Computer Policy – Computer Configuration – Administrative Templates – System – Driver Installation – Allow non-Administrators to install drivers for these device setup classes.

 

Allowing Vista Standard Users to install printer drivers
