Ruckus Irritation

If there's one think about my expensive Ruckus that gets up my nose is the fact that the ZD controller only displays info on devices by showing their MAC Addresses!

 

Surely, no-one wants that - people (well me) want computer/device names - failing that IP addresses!

 

Or is it just me

PS Sitting here bored waiting for 4 laptops to install Paint.net (taken 1.5 hours so far and they are up to 80% installing net 3.51 - I think I have a problem somewhere

Just went back into the suite and the cleaner had closed the lids and stuck the netbooks on the side

 

Thank God I had them set to hibernate on lib closure and they'd finished installing .net framework. :phew:

Have ya fed it back to your supplier they should be able to feed it back as a feature request to Ruckus who do listen to customers, well certainly used to when I first started off with Domino as some of the UK Schools first Ruckus users back all those years ago! So well worth feeding back up the food chain

Have to agree with this one. Having to cross-reference MAC addresses against our DHCP database is annoying.

yep that irritated me too! Fear not though firmware version 9 sorts it out and references them by name

Does it?! I'm running version 9, and on my WPA2-PSK network it still displays the clients by MAC and IP.

 

On the 802.1x network (that I'm just starting to get going) it displays them via hostname or user (depending on if you're using machine or user authentication).

Maybe it depends where you are looking, Under user and system activities on the dashboard it displays AP[APNAMEHERE]. Admittedly, under Mesh for example it displays them by MAC but shows the Description column.

Yeah - you're right.

 

Seems a bit inconsistent... not that I'm complaining. I love my Ruckus system a lot.

agreed - I would only expect to see the mac address if I was looking at individual AP details not in a list of other info.

 

I love it too! We seem to have a new student area getting heavy usage but weak signal so im going to mesh a new AP and see how it goes Job done

(If it does the job - i'll go back to trying to twist arm of the school to purchase a support agreement!)

you'll only see hostnames / usernames if you are doing 802.1x authentication. There's no way for the controller to know who you are when using WPA2-PSK as your machine doesn't send any credentials.

The Currently Active Clients list shows MAC, User/IP, Access Point etc etc

 

On the dashboard/events list its displayed as User[uSERNAME] joins WLAN[LANNAME] from AP[APNAME] but like Paul says you'd need to be authenticated.

Hi Guys, you can have the logs dashboard etc display a descriptive name

of the AP instead of it's MAC address by giving the AP a descriptive name under Configure -> Access Points.

 

You can achieve the same thing for clients if there is an authentication method used on the SSID that requires a username somewhere down the ine of authentication or authorization, i.e 802.1X or web portal authentication.

 

Both of these features have been there since V8.0 as of last year.

Click on the "Go Advanced" button on the quick reply section, there is an option to attach files in there

You can see that unauthenticated users will be displayed with a MAC, the client has not gone through an authorization process.

Right - I'm back at my Ruckus school - how do I go about getting my clients authorised so they show up better in the Dashboard?
