Genie Backup Manager - any comments?

We currently use Veritas Backup Exec v 8.6, but our LA no longer support or supply it. They now offer Genie Backup Manager v6.

 

I've never heard of this. Does anyone else use this? Does it work? Does it do backup-to-disk OK?

Tell SICTS to stick it where the sun don't shine. They tried to fob it onto a school I support and they hated it, and it was just not the same as Veritas.

I assume your a full time (mon-fri type techiey) so can check the backups started, so just go for NT Backup if you don't want to stick to Veritas / have to leave it.

Thanks. I queried this with them after posting here, and they told me it was a mistake. Genie is for standalone machines.

 

They still can't tell me which BE version to go for, though - there are dozens.

What are you wanting to backup and what drive do you us with it and lets see if I can solve that one for oyu

I have Veritas Backup Exec v 8.6 but I also bought Genie Backup Manager v6 when I was having trouble with tapes. I find it ok, I use Genie to back up data & shared drives to a server built from an old PC fitted with 3 x hard drives for extra peace of mind. I alternate backup runs and always have some fall back. There is a new version of Genie which I have not tried yet.

 

I did have problems with one version which included File Access Manager but it may have been more my end than the program.

It's taken me a while to get back to this. Half term and all that...

 

Schools ICT have come back and recommended Symantec Backup Exec 11d for Windows Servers + CPS + basic support.

 

I'm not sure this is right, so I'll query it with them.

 

I'll start a new thread here with a more meaningful title.

Genie Backup Manager and Genie Timeline [Free Edition]

 

I am supposing these two names are describing the same product? I ask because I saw some information about Genie Timeline and it seems to fit the bill for what I am looking for. I am trying to solve a nightly backup problem for our Finance Guy. He has been told that he should be backing up the SIMS Finance data each day [over and above the backups that I take]

 

He has bought himself an external USB hard disk. However the software that comes with it is not 'network aware' and so it does not see the S: drive. What I would like is a little bit of software that can be scheduled to run after he [our Finance Guy] has gone home and before the nightly station shutdown kicks in at 6:30. It says 'zero scheduling' on the web page but despite this can it be scheduled as an option?

 

Would Genie Timeline [Free Edition] fit the bill?
