Hi

 

Does anyone know how to make a RM USB Build Disk not using the sticks they supply?

 

We are using floppies at the moment and desperatly need to go back to USB!

I spent ages trying to work this one out, but in the end had to conceed to getting the RM 'Approved' sticks. As far as I am aware, the USB stick needs to support USB-FDD. This to do with the way that RM have built the scripts that support the rebuild. So, unless anyone has reconfigured the scripts, I think we're stuck with the USB-FDD requirements.

Oh dear.

 

Sounds like the fun we used to have on CC2.4 when it was floppys only and I managed to hack it so that I could add build files to the c$ share on the machine reboot it and kick off a rebuild.

...on second thoughts, I just found this on RM Communities, might be worth a try...

 

Making a bootable USB pen is easy it’s just the other rubbish like dose the workstation support that brand of USB pen to boot off.

 

Here is my guide (very easy):

 

1. You need to download a peace of software called HP Drive Key Boot Utility Version 7.41 from HERE and install

 

2. Build an RM build disk stranded and tweak it (if you want)

 

3. Make sure the RM build disk is in the a:\ and a blank USB pen is fitted.

 

4. Start the HP Drive Key Boot Utility

5. Click next, then select your USB pen drive letter and next

6. Click, Crate new or replace existing configuration and next

7. Click, Floppy Disk and next

8. Click Image from floppy, select drive letter and next

9. Wait a few sec’s till it say “Configuration Successful” and Finish.

 

Done

 

You now have a bootable USB Pen.

 

All the staff here use Novetech laptops only a few months old and we use Kingston DataTraveler sticks.

I have tried this with a Kingston 1G and the novatechs build happily off it but I did the same thing with the 2GB ones and they just bring up “Disk I/O error”.

 

For Workstations:

 

We have the old RM Ascend the ones with the white cases and blue fronts.

 

We have mix and match mother boards from the MSI MS6787 to the ASUS P5VD2-TVM.

 

This is due to the MSI MS6787 over heating and crashing the workstations so RM replacement them for us.

 

Anyway:

 

MSI MS6787 – Both Kingston pens don’t work at all but I did get them to build off one RM safe drives.

 

One of the two works: Blue 64mb or black 128mb

 

ASUS P5VD2-TVM – Both Kingston pens work fine with no problems.

 

So really I think its a case of trial and error or maybe get a topic open asking for people to tell us what they use.

We do the same as mtdmitchell. Build a build disk onto floppy in the usual way, then use HP's USB utility to transfer the disk image to the pen. Works a treat for us, and creating a new pen only takes a minute or so.

You wouldn't even need to go for a whole wds setup just to provide network booting.

 

You could do it using tftpd32 as your pxe server and sys/pxelinux to boot your images.

If the problem is that it does not even try to boot from the USB stick, then use a Netac U207 stick from RM instead of a USB floppy.

 

If the problem is that it does try to boot but then always gets an error when trying to load DOS - see:
