Pay increase.

How do people go about asking for this? In your next supervision, compare your roles to similar roles else where? Talk about the extra work you have done since starting? Never done it before so would like to know how other people have done this. :)

I did it like this,

1 - outlined all the responsibilities that come with the IT role, as I find many people don't actually know what we do..

2 - Listed some of the improvements/changes made since your arrival, testimonials from staff help here

3 - showed examples of similar roles with pay differences, I showed how I could increase my pay simply by changing to the private sector (then a year later I increased my pay by moving to the private sector ;-) )

I'd say don't go into it militantly, show a reasoned argument for why you believe you're worth more money, and make it clear its not an ultimatum

Good method Domino, it requires the SLT to give a flying monkeys though :)

Point 2 has been re-iterated by myself, other staff (who don't want me to leave) & even other members of SLT... sometimes it just isn't going to happen.

As Domino has said, don't go crazy and hand your notice or anything if they say no... it can be difficult retracting it after :)

Aye that is true,

however given the reliance on IT in every discipline of every business nowadays I'd have hoped that most people would take the hint that a good tech isn't something to lose

That said, there's no accounting for peoples lack of foresight ;-)

They'd rather work with hindsight, bump the grade up that way and hope that the new employee will stick around a bit longer, well, here at least. Reliance on us is insane, we have far more inclusion than any other support staff (yes, even more than TAs who are little more than gophers in our school).

I am applying frantically to get back into the real world!

I did it like this, bit the bullet and was just up front about it and when asked if there was anything else I like, I said more pay....there was a sound of air being sucked in past teeth....then I was let down gently with the answer no sorry anything else!

Mine cant afford to pay me extra, yet they can afford to spend £10'000 on a consultant who "works" 3 days a term at our place...

They can't afford to pay me anything extra but can find budget for a staff conference! I know the feeling, we have a consultant in at the moment too but this is to help us see whether we are being under paid, still it feels like a kick in the teeth when you state why you're understaffed and why you're underpaid and they're just not listening!

My advice is, if you do ask, be prepared for a no - have a backup plan, that's not to say leave but maybe try ask for training and justify its purpose for work - they will try to get 'good value' from you, try to get value from them as an employer.

Early on I suggested that reviews should include reviewing my current responsibilities and comparing them to the LA job descriptions. Pretty much each review has resulted in a regrading and pay rise :)
