Large number of internet users without broadband due to outage in Edinburgh

"Tens of thousands of homes across the UK are without internet broadband on Friday night.

 

BT has confirmed the technical problems are affecting a "significant part" of the UK and say engineers are working to fix them.

 

Northern Ireland, Scotland and the north of England are the main areas affected.

 

A spokesman for BT said the company hoped to restore service as soon as possible.

 

"There's an issue with a node in Edinburgh and we've sent our engineers to deal with it," he added.

 

BT's website said it was "aware of a temporary problem" affecting the Fair Isles, Northern Highlands and Islands area, as well as the Edinburgh area."

Not seen any issues like this with Japan or other places that have faster broadband - maybe that's just me ??

The BT network seems to lack much redundancy. So when node goes down, rather than the affected exchanges being able to use another, they just get cut off. Maybe these other places have better redundancy?

There were similar problems in the West Midlands on Thursday morning.

Yes, most consumer and cheap business option lack redundancy ... and that is where the cost savings are. That is why Universities, JANET, NEN, RBCs etc have higher costs. The worst that happens is that one node goes down and the rest of the grid still runs fine.

 

Virgin are a tad better than BT, but you get what you pay for.

If there is a problem with the internet, why are they putting a message on their website as those with the problem cant see it as they have no internet? Or am I missing something....
