To me this is a BAD thing, though I can understand why they have done it, to make the battery life as good as possible. I do get the impression that: "Steve hates adobe flash", and that by doing this he is shooting himself in the foot at the current time. I guees his counter argument is that to get round this, he is launching the mac app store, so developers could remove the need for the browser to try and do everything online, and have better developed apps that remove the need for browser plugins. The ipad has already shown that developers are making apps that are conventionally browser based, but without the need to use safari. (a good example would be the bbc news app) Others thoughts please...

Leaving aside the Apple/Adobe tantrums and name-calling, providing a means of easily grabbing the latest version as part of initial setup (as opposed to packaging a version months out of date) would ensure a more secure initial load. 1

I wonder how long before people start going after apple for their business practices the same way people did to Microsoft. Don't worry Steve, your ivory tower (built in california TM) will come tumbling down soon enough. Apple's business practices stink.

localzuk Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 Makes sense. Apple is not a fan of Flash, and are trying their hardest to eliminate its usage. By releasing their computers without it on by default they force the hands of developers to move away from Flash. We all know how annoying Flash is, in terms of memory and CPU drain. It isn't uncommon to go to a site which has a poorly coded Flash element and find that your 2.8Ghz quad core i7 suddenly spikes to 100% usage.

I'm not saying it's their argument - it's what I'd do in their situation. Any application that is known to get regular vulnerabilities wouldn't get installed as part of the default image on any hardware I was selling. As part of the initial setup I'd have a "patch OS, download and install add-on software" dialogue that let them connect it to the network, power it on, create their user account then have a cup of tea while it secures itself. If I could get away with it, I'd also have something (for the novice) that warned them that $random_app was a bit rubbish and they might want to use $other_app instead (say foxit vs adobe reader).

Is flash freely downloadable from the net and installable on OS X should you want it? Can't see the fuss myself. By shipping the OS with Flash do Apple have to support it as part of the OS installation? Personally I'm surprised they ever shipped it at all.
