jamesfed Posted October 15, 2010 Report Posted October 15, 2010 Hi all, Right now we have a number of instances of SQL Express (mainly 2008) running on various servers and I was wondering if we would see any benifits from consolidating all those instances onto a single server? Currently SQL runs our SharePoint server, Libary system, SCVMM and WSUS (maybe a few other little things). If there would be an advantage the SQL Server would be hosted on our Virtual Server with whatever RAM/Processor allocation required (that shouldn't be tooo much of a problem unless I need to go over 2-4GB RAM). Thanks!
kevin_lane Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 i my self was thinking consolidating my sql servers into one but from the advise i got it wasn't recommend because the way sql is with regards to memory hungry i went to a conf a few weeks back where Microsoft was virtualizing sql servers and it seemed all ok but you need to think of the risk with everything being on one box i think your going to at least need a min of 8 to 16 gig of memory i might be wrong but then again i don't know what sort of setup you have and how big you are
apearce Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 you would have to create a new SharePoint/WSS farm as you can't move the sharepoint database from express to full SQL. A.
