SIMS on Vista

Doing some testing with Vista Business 'N' (mustn't forget the N!)

 

Got SIMS installed no problem, and worked the first time that I used it, however since restarting the PC SIMS no longer works, I get the following Error:

 

Incorrect L:\SIMS\Connect.ini file

 

Now I know that this is the correct location on the file but I just can't get past this message.

 

Something else to note is that I tried to re-install SIMS over itself and got the following error message when specifying the install location:

 

SIMS Installer was unable to write to the SIMS applications shared directory supplied as "L:\SIMS".

 

Any suggestions? or anyone experienced similar?

 

All shares and permissions are set correctly. Problem only exists under VISTA.

The drive was mapped from an elevated process. UAC will not allow you to access it.

Turn that silly feature off and it works fine!

It's a shame though UAC has some nice features that are helpful in a network environment.

Hey, I have the same problem only we dont use Vista and its not allowing us to install SIMS at all.

 

I run the SIMSINST.exe and get that same message...

 

SIMS have been on the phone to us all day with no joy. The only thing thats changed is that IE7 GP has been applied as machines are starting to come back into school with it on and they get confused over phishing filters and wot-not.

 

But the sims folder is open to attact at any time as it has full access rights by anyone...

 

Im sure it happened before i'd even installed the GP settings.

But I just can't get it to work with an teacher account. I have turned off UAC, each time I run SIMS it wants to run the upgrade when the its already been upgraded?

 

If I run just Pulsar it errors out. Any ideas on getting SIMS to work on Vista we have one vista laptop in school.

Have exactly the same issue here. Can install/run SIMS fine as God user however as lowly staff user it bombs out when trying to do an "upgrade" (even though it is the latest version)

 

Have followed all the advice about UAC etc.. but still cannot get this to work. Same with FMS too

 

Anyone got an idiots guide?

I have got SIMS working on Vista and discovered the best way is get the machine on the network then log on as the domain administrator and thewn run the SimsInst install. After the reboot log on as the network administrator again and connect to the connect.ini and log off.

 

You can then log on using any account with permissions to SIMS and it should work for you. The issue is down to the c:\documents and settings with XP and before -vs- Vista's c:\user directories

whilst that works, according to Capita, they do not support anyone who uses SIMS on a Vista platform, so its no good in the end. Until they port it for Vista properly, they wont support anyone using it.

I do know Capita will not support Vista and most LA staff who support Sims will tell you the same but some people want Vista just because it is new; why not be a step ahead of the rest?

We do support Vista on a workstation - am I missing something?

It may be that some local support groups do not support SIMS on Vista yet. If people have an issue with this please verify whether it is the local team or LA saying no Vista support or the central team. It may be that the position of the local team has changed since you last checked.

 

@Phil : do you have a kb article that states about Vista support? It may help in these circumstances.

Note you can't use Vista as a SIMS server. Yes, suffolk do use XP as a SIMS server before anyones says about XP\Vista as an SIMS Server OS.
