Sounds like they did the same as Somerset did down here when they formed SouthWestOne with IBM.

 

CLEO is the RBC for that area, and they buy services from LUNS, with Lancashire being just one of the stakeholders. I doubt they'll go around changing things with internet connectivity too quickly... Also take into account that Lancashire is quite a rural area, so installing things up there is quite expensive.

To be honest, it has already happened in other areas ... and in Northants we have done it too ... except not with a private company, but another LA (Cambridgeshire). Local Govt Shared Services is something that is popular with central Govt so except to see more of this.

Most of the high schools have 100 mb Fiber connections already. They had to move a few cows out of the way when they were laying the cable though, but it's all in the name of progress.

Indeed, the school connections are already in place. However, in the 'new world', the idea will be that to save money, BT will use what is currently the CLEO network to connect a whole lot more than just schools.

Unfortunately I think it's a bit bigger than that, as I believe CLEO in it's current form will cease to exist. There won't be a CLEO office like there is now. The new BT/LCC joint company will assume that role AND provide both the ISP and county level services. So it's not just a CLEO back-end contractor change, it's a complete rejig of the way the service is currently run to bring it all in house in to one entity.

I'm kinda hoping that all this will mean more than a 2mb line for my school in the back of beyond. We were meant to be getting a direct radio link, but alas, funding, yatta yatta, etc etc ...

 

As for Westfield, the news I heard was that there wouldn't be any changes in staffing or ways of things being dealt with, just that they will come under the BT Umbrella, but I could be wrong ..

I'm more concerned with how much it's going to cost, we have had the 100mb fiber connection and before all this CLEO BT transfer was talked about BT already said they could never match the cost we are getting it at from CLEO, they was talking of a figure around the £14k mark . Could be we get a good personal discount from DABS?.... #justasking you never know who is watching

 

Could not make it to today's tech meeting so will have to hear 2nd hand what was talked about in relation to this matter. If some one could post any news, that would be nice!

Unfortunately unless additional funding is put in, this position is unlikely to change. The current telco provider already uses BT circuits where appropriate/possible and there are very strict rules in place regarding telco equivalence to ensuring that BT cannot offer circuits more cheaply to it's own customers than it will provide to others (that said, the new partnership is a LCC/BT joint venture company 60% owned by BT, not just "BT" the company) Regarding BT fibre, unless the price across the board comes down, the situation will be the same as at present. This isn't to say more funding won't become available for the radio/another solution though. As far as I am aware, the few harder to connect sites which haven't received an upgrade as yet aren't off the radar by any means, and the push will continue through the transfer.

here's keeping my fingers cross .. we were meant to be getting a 10mb Radio Link, but I don't know what happened to that idea. I might make contact and push a few buttons to see what happens ..
