having to type in domain.local

Just have a little problem, I have a server which is hosting a website, some teachers can access this site by just typing in the name of the server in Internet Explorer while other have to type the servername.domain.local, to access it.

 

Does anyone know how to make it so that they just have to type in the servername.

Do the clients have the domain suffix correct?

 

If you do ipconfig /all what does the primary DNS suffix say?

sounds like a DNS type problem to me. Have you got more than one DNS server? If so, check that both of them have the correct records in for the server and are both returning the correct values by querying them using nslookup.

Add the domain suffix through IP addressing on one client to test it works, if it works add it to DHCP when it distributes IPs.

I have fixed it for the time by adding the address to the local intranet safe list in internet explorer.

Which also fixed a few scripts that ran on that site.

I suspect some users are checking in to server A and others server B, which is why some but not all users are having this problem. Are the servers replicating OK?

 

Might be worth logging in as an admin on a workstation, manually specifying a DNS server IP so you can quickly identify which of the two servers is creating the problem.
