Embed Zimbra inbox in Moodle

Hi all,

 

We use both Moodle and Zimbra here (provided by the LA but that's another story) and was wondering if anyone new of a way of embedding a users inbox in to their Moodle front page. So kind of like the way you can get your gmail if you are signed in to iGoogle.

 

If it can't be done at the moment, would anyone have an idea of where to start?

I don’t believe that one exists for Moodle but there is one for Joomla just need to re code it.

I would be willing to extend my Zimbra SSO block for moodle to include the users inbox. I will have a look at the code over the next few days.

Is your moodle hosted with Link2ICT or In House?

We had a meeting about it yesterday talking about whats good and more importantly whats bad.

One of the things we discused was that the Zimbra interface is the ugliest interface known to man and is difficult for the children to navigate and suggested they embed it into Moodle so it's easier and saves the children having to navigate to another site. This was met with a look of dread and fear and so I thought I would ask the professionals if you could help.

I think ugliness is a matter of personal opinion. Our students (aged 11+; and staff for that matter) have little to no difficulty in using the Zimbra web interface. Embedding a complete separate application into Moodle will probably be even more confusing for them if they can't figure out how to use what they already have.

I think there are two components required here - some form of SSO component to get Moodle and Zimbra to talk, but then some code to get Zimbra to display e-mails within the Moodle interface. As to how well this would work in practice is unclear.

 

Another alternative would be skinning Zimbra which I believe is possible - it might be more the case whether Link2ICT will let you do it?

 

Another alternative altogether is Office 365 - the e-mail interface is OWA, but then you also have the likes of SharePoint. This solves the SSO problem, but then again the available resources to SharePoint are somewhat lacking and is something I'm currently working on.

AMazing how someone could call Zimbra ugly. (aware the age of this thread and newer versions being a bit better!) It's *miles* ahead of all the fancy interfaces.
