sending/receiving email on iphone4 v4.1 via proxies

Hi guys,

total noob to iphone so sorry in advance.

 

this may be a noob question but i just wanna clarify before i start messing with ports etc

 

i have 6 e mails 4 domain emails 1 live e mail and 1 gmail setup and at home work fine sending and recieving, come into school today and added phone to wifi set up proxy. no problem with web etc but when i go to send e mail i get this error:

the mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. verify that you have entered correct account info in mail settings.

 

so because the wifi is set up and in school some ports maybe closed i will not be able to send/recieve. How come then it does not auto switch to mobile wap gprs etc to retrieve these ? or is it something simple im not seeing ?

 

please be gentle lol as i get the feeling its something so simple.

Quite simply we use education gmail and when not on the Ruckus wireless network everything works fine, internet etc

 

I have enabled IMAP on the gmail accounts and can get email perfect on the Mobile phone system outside the tin roof school with the imap.gmail.com settings.

 

I also get the same error inside school has you "the mail server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. verify that you have entered correct account info in mail settings"

 

Tried resetting the password and the Captcha and still this does not work.

 

Anyone got any clues. We are on YHGFL but works fine from IE8/9 just not the mobile phones and only on the wireless with a manual proxy ?

Have you tried setting your Gmail account up as an Exchange account rather than IMAP? May be a way around it? I had Gmail set up this way on my old iPhone without any issues, whether behind a proxy or not.

Some RBC's / LAs will not allow outbound connections to send mail (as it is usually set on SMTP) as it means that any device could be infected by a mailer worm and spread like hell. You generally have to go via the 'official' SMTP gateway or a specified relay ... and some places do not allow that at all ... but some do. YMMV.
