Blockbuster video rental stores goes bust as it files for bankruptcy

 

Sign of the times, out of date unsustainable business model. Failure to move with the times and failure to deal with postal rental services.

 

Very sad, I have very fond memories of walking to the video store. I am sure I am not the only person to have picked up a store manager there either. ;-)

I've got a couple of mates that work at the local Blockbuster - guess they're out of a job now...

Saw this yesterday. Its only the US arm of the company, the UK and European side of things is still ok - unless they have gone bust overnight.

Yep they do, i have used it before on a months free trial. very similar to lovefilm

Love film is doing very well, it is a great idea. Not sure of how long it will last.

 

It looks like Blue Ray is turning into a new version of laser disks, with major parties saying it should be scrapped. New technology has already superseded it. Will everything be electronic downloads on demand or will DVD just keep on going as a cheap and easy ubiquitous format?

 

Our local ASDA does not stock Blue Ray Players or Films. Loads of cheap DVD's though.

I used lovefilm for a while, kept sending c**p films so ditched them

they only send you whats in your list that you choose...

 

but saying that i only rent xbox games, saves £40 every time i want to play a game just to find it takes 3 hours to complete

Yes it's only the US side that has gone bust (due to massive $900million debt). The UK side is alright for now.

 

Personally I have found Blockbuster to be really good for 2nd hand games. Found lots of PS3 one's for less then £10.

 

For games as well as Lovefilm there is Rent Games Online - Rent Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 (PS3) & Wii Games, Game Rental Online UK

I've not got a BluRay player myself, each time someone tries to show me the difference between a DVD and a BluRay disc of the same movie, I can't for the life of me see much difference. I'm happy with DVDs and streaming/downloadable content.

 

Just look at games - in the US, more games were downloaded than bought on disc in the first 6 months of this year. Movies will go the same way IMO. (Linky)

As pointed out it's the US arm, the operation in the UK is a totally seperate business, the same reason why Borders went bust in the UK and not the US.
