Why !

Why is it that teaching staff cannot understand that they should not let students logon using their (the teachers) logons?

Why cant they understand that they have, via their logon, access to websites that students arent allowed on?

Why cant they understand that they can, via their logon, delete all the files on the shared staff only accessible mapped drives?

Why cant they understand that they can, via their logon, delete all the files in that teachers home area?

Why cant they understand that the student in question has had their account temporarily suspended for a reason?

I actually am contemplating going onto the server and deleting all the files in the staff shared areas/teachers home area, and sticking downloaded child porn into their area, to make a point. These are supposed to be degree standard qualified teachers, not a bunch of retards. Its elementary basic security 101. Seriously, I mean would they give their bank card and pin number to some student? or their car keys? or their home keys?

I swear at times that I think the sooner computers doing teaching comes along the better, infuriatingly it seems that half the teachers in the country are incompetent, technologically medieval, unable to adapt to an unexpected change or just plain lazy.

Presumably you have a AUP? Presumably said AUP also has clauses covering the issues you've mentioned? Presumably you can now beat your ignorant teachers to death with it?

Hehe, we do, and no doubt will. But the ignoring of that AUP still bugs the bejeebus out of me.

Well actually no..thats not entirely true, its not the act of ignoring that constantly amazes me, its the fact that they actually cannot see why there is anything wrong with doing it. Even the year 7s understand that you dont give someone access to your stuff

I'd move their work out of their user area, let them complain and tell them a kid must have done it and then move it back saying you recovered it from backup which was lucky, but they might not be so lucky next time.

are they male or female? I have a cup of coffee riding on the answer.

YES! I knew it, similar thing happens here, but only with the female teachers. I owe myself one cup of coffee which i'm going to go claim now.

I've not had any problems like that here per se... at the last school I worked at, a member of the D&T department did that, and not only let a student use his logon, also the kid saw what the password was over his shoulder, *AND* later on tried to get a copy of the Viglen Classlink software out of Viglen by impersonating an IT Tech and saying that it needed to be sent to his home address as he was 'out of the school on medical leave and needed to work from home'.

I don't miss those days.

Its not because the teachers are dumb, it's because the managers are teachers. Management are unable to either come up with a decent ICT policy or enforce it because they are not good managers. They are being walked over by the general teachers. Don't blame the teaqchers stupidity when management have failed to train them.

How much training does it take to know that if you give someone your login, they can delete your stuff?

Surely thats not an issue of training, but an issue of common sense?

This is why I fully support the govt's new idea of allowing high level business people with no teaching qualifications to apply for jobs as Head Teachers as they will have much more real world experiance and ability to manage people. Teachers just can't DO management, they aren't organised or trained enough.

This happened at my last school:

A Year 4 boy (admittedly extremely bright) came to me and said "Mr ---- said please could you give me the adminstrator password for the PC in our classroom so that I can install this CD on it"

I must have counted to around 100 before saying NO as calmly as I could!

at my last school we had a design teacher that had given his password out to a number of students.

we also suspected that some of the students knew at least 2 other staff passwords.

we sent round an email telling all the staff that due to a security breach ie students knowing a staff password that a number of sensitive documents with staff details on have been printed off by a student. (was a lie but got the message across) we also listed a number of other reasons such as the student would have access to there emails etc.

therefore all staff need to change there password

then from AD selected all the staff and ticked Change password on next logon, set the policy to, cant use the same password.

I have moved the AUPs in our school by having it accepted into their contracts with the unions backing. I have now shot to the top of the "in crowd person" with whom to be very associated with. In short it states that any person who breaches this AUP by whatever measures can and will feel the wrath of the headteacher and or police, and they could end up in court under the data protection and misuse of computer acts.

I can beat you all, the previous person who'd done my job had told all the heads of dep the admin password to make things easier for him, and they'd subsiquently passed it onto their teachers without him knowing. I didn't know this and didn't bother changing the admin password since there was so much else to do (assumed it was secure)

Some time during the year, one of the teachers gave the kids the admin password to use the admin account (i assume because they had forgotten their password.)

Queue all the kids knowing the password and going around deleting eachothers work.

Another problem we've had is that they choose the most easy to guess passwords. If we try and set any complexity settings, or change password after period of time settings we get complaints that they cant remember their password. Normally i would respond with tough, but when it comes from the head, the bursar, etc. it gets very frustrating. Usefully when i need to log on as the user to test something on their laptop though, just a case of what's their son/daughters name? Ah yes.....

I'm so tempted to ask a group of students to do a "social studies" questionnaire asking: Name, Place of birth, date of birth, number of children, names of children, names of pets, partner/spouses name, maybe even include mothers maiden name if they said they were going to produce a family tree for them. Then use given passwords to check log-ons, and then name and shame in briefing, highlighting that they'd just given students almost all the details they need to open up bank accounts, commit fraud, etc, let alone just log on as them.

We are having a similar problem over here in my school.

Before last year, there was not really any type of AUP for the staff at all. They all complained when we implemented the policy. After awhile they just started ignoring it. One of the staff somehow discovered our domain admin password and started giving it to students to use if they forgot their passwords  Talk about problems! Both students and staff installed so much junk on all the computers, we ended up having to reimage almost all of our pcs (which is only about 40, but still...)

This year, we made the AUP much stricter. Our AUP is two pages long, plus an additional page for the agreement form. If anyone wants to see ours, let me know. Ours still needs work, but seems to be moving in the right direction.

We told some of the teachers who had been sharing their password with students that our new "security system" had detected a security breach with their account, so they must choose a new password to use the computer. Now if we can only convince them to not write their passwords on post-it notes stuck to the computer screen.

Yeah....odd that they can remember their Cashpoint card number, but cant remember their personal password. Merely goes to show how much they think the password matters I suppose

Would be interested to have a read of your AUP Claridentech, I have PM'ed you my email addy, would love a copy of it if possible?

We don't have an AUP here atm, been trying to get something sorted, but I don't have the time to do it (and i'm not exactly paid to do that sort of work)

We had a few problems like this as well, we set the staff to change passwords at next logon and thought we would be ok..........! But what chance have you got when a teacher uses their initials, (yes just two of them i.e AB)

Kids clocked what he was doing when logging on and then started logging on as him and he wondered why his work ket going missing?

You say teachers are dumb? not allow them but some do take the biscuit. (L
