upgrading XP embeded on samsung signage for Xibo client install.

Hi I have a Samsung screen which has XP from a flash drive, I want to be running Xibo client but that requires IE7+ to be installed. I have worked out there is an EWF option to commit changes to the boot partition, but for the life of me I cant get the IE7 or IE8 installs to complete successfully. The IE8 never completes without a required update first and the IE7 asks for a reboot and redirects you via a link on the desktop to the troubleshooting site on MS. Basically after the reboot I still have IE6

From what I can see the only option is to Reinstall windows from scratch with an XP3 and ie7+ on board. Has anyone come across this and solved it?

after your install you should be able to commit the changes using EWF (you need the password) when it reboots you should see ie finish installing like a regular reset.

Otherwise disable EWF (Requires restart) install then re enable.

In case anyone stumbles across this. on a search.

Xibo requires >IE7 and >.net2 and if you want to play powerpoints then the PPT application (player wont do). The primary part had only 1Gb to play with and of that about 400mb was free which wouldn't allow the install of all the components to get xibo to run.

Firstly the Samsung has EWF enable by default which prevents changes being written to the drive on reboot. to disable this you need to right click the magicinfo pro in the taskbar or Cmd line is

C:\>ewfmgr c: -commitanddisable

and then ewfmgr c: -enable. to turn it back on

Also It threw up an error every time I went to upgrade IE to 7 or 8

My version of the Samsung was NTFS so the instructions on here

reflash XP to original state

wouldn't work with out a bootable pendrive that could recognise an NTFS drive. and write to it.

In short I had to disable EWF

turn off the pagefile on drive D:

boot to partition magic

delete the D drive

resize C: to fill the full 4 GB

then go for the install of IE8 .net2 and PPT 2003 (just the app not the full suite.)

There is a load of Samsung stuff here for download including the clean OS reflash

Were you able to install IE7 after you did the repartition? I really would like to use the Xibo software since it is clearly better than MagicInfo.

From what I read you can not update the embedded XP os. Any advice on this would be great.

HI yes sorry so long to reply! These screens would be the death of me I have spent days reconfiguring them I have them at a usable state now.

YEs once I had repartitioned to one full drive and disabled EWF I could Insstall what I liked on there like a "normal" operating system. Getting the bloody things to shutdown and start up reliably was another matter. I went for a hibernation rather than standby option as Samsung in there wisdom have Bios which doesn't recognise a magic packet. But still I was getting reports that it was coming on over the weekend. It maybe that something else on the network was sending rogue magic WOL packets but I couldn't trace it. Really flakey hibernation for some reason aswell. I tried about 4 different shutdown utilities and a sched task running a DLL type thinger but none of them seamed to run reliably. If I powered straight from the mains (ie with a timer switch) it wasn't booting to windows either. So now I have a black JPG image scheduled for overnight in XIBO as a priority. Not good energy usage wise, but to the casual observer it appears as though the unit is off.
