Hi,

We have decided to install 30 new network points into our old ROLSA block, but our patch panel is full. What I decided to do is just crimp them at the cab side and and have them plugged into the switch. I have wired the ports up in the rooms, but need help wiring up the cab side. How will we wire them up (i.e. 568A or 568B).

 

Normally we would get a company out, but decided to do some of the work ourselves, whilst the schools are off (and due to finance).

 

Advise on this is really is appreciated.

Is there no way you can fit another patch panel in the cab? you can terminate 48 ports into 1u of space, and if you get the krone punch down ones, they will be so much easier to terminate than crimping 30 cables, and also less likely to have problems in the future. Something like this 48 Way RJ45 Cat5e UTP Patch Panel - 1u

Oh +1 to that! Punchdown to a panel even if you have to screw the panel to the side of the rack. SO much easier than crimping ends (and I got quite good at it)!

+1 for adding another patch panel. If you have to crimp them though it depends on how you wired your sockets (I usually use 568B).

Umm... isn't 568A only used for crossovers? ie direct PC to PC connection.

 

Yes thats right a cross over cable is "568A - 568B"

 

Straight-Thru cables should be "568B - 568B" and straight-thru is what 01hanstu needs.

 

Colour codes:

 

568B CABLE END

 

1 White-Orange

2 Orange

3 White-Green

4 Blue

5 White-Blue

6 Green

7 White-Brown

8 Brown

 

 

568A CABLE END

 

1 White-Green

2 Green

3 White-Orange

You really shouldn't do this. Structured cat5e cabling is single core and not stranded like patch lead cabling (strip some patch cables apart and you will see what I mean). Regular crimps are designed to go through the multi-strands and not into single core as they inevitably either push to one side of the core, or weaken it - causing hard to trace network problems when the single core breaks. Patch panels are designed for single core, punching down each side of it - thats what they are for.

Most countries only have informal standards with this, because they got introduced and used before something sorted out, but basically it doesn't matter as long as you standardized sitewide, I believe the defacto for UK is "B" (compared to say, Australia where its "A") but you just need to ensure that both ends match for a straight through cable.

Exactly - you'll need special solid core crimps too. Another +1 for a patch panel in there somehow - I always find when I do a job like this I have to re-visit it later on to do it properly.
