Which imaging software do you use?

Is RIS actually working?

Yes I get that, and enter a name in the top box. The bottom box gets filled in automatically with what I enter in the top box so I leave it as that.

 

Then click next and you get a summary of the setup like with any other boot creation. When you click next again and it tries to make it I get the errors mention before.

I tried it on mine, takes about two seconds and goes completed. You running this as the administrator? What the the permissions on the RIS folder. Also see if you can get a machine to boot from RIS anyway to check its installed and authorised.

I am so very glad that I discovered it and learned how to use it. Gotta love free, instead of the carp that Ghost puts you through. tying the licence to the HDD is stupid, one of the main reasons for imaging it failed hard drive.

RIS is working fine, I use it already but it's Ghost 7 which doesn't support SATA so I'm just trying to get Solution Suite 2.0 up and running so I don't have to mess with BIOS settings anymore on the clients.

 

I shall check the permissions on the folders, though yes I am running it as Domain Administrator.

I don't use the Ghost console, I just use the Ghostcast Server stuff and RIS to get to it instead of a floppy 1) for speed and 2) some floppy drives are broken and we won't replace them now.

Ok, the permissions on the RemoteInstall folder (and everything within inheritsthese) are:

Sharing: Everyone, Full Control

Security: Administrators and SYSTEM, Full Control. Authenticated Users, Read+Execute/Read/List Folder Contents

with the admin machines i setup

xp with sp2

office 2003 pro

sims.net

active studio

plus others

I use ghost to basically clone the machine and then if any machine (same build)goes down i deploy the stored image to it via the console.

I would like to know how to use RIS for eductional purposes, but never had the time! no suprises there!

Ghost is quicker.

RIS is more cutomizable.

 

With RIS it will install Windows and then when the computer boots any msi's that apply to it's OU will be installed.

As opposed to Ghost where you just load a preconfigured setup.

 

I don't know what Zenworks is, but if it's not free I'm not interested at the minute.

can ris deliver images that are prebuilt with apps on like office2003 etc and must i always do a sysprep, (i have always used ghost and just change the machine name and run the sid changer locally)

G4L maybe an option, free works same as ghost. Used it here to image windows servers and laptop with no problem. bit for bit image so probably slower than ghost.

 

Ghost for Linux is a hard disk and partition imaging and cloning tool similar to Norton Ghost©. The created images are optionally compressed and transferred to an FTP server instead of cloning locally.

I was using ghost to handle all this but now, thanks to this forum, I've started using RIS and I cannot understate what a welcome change it was..

 

It's mean't upgrading a few NIC's to PXE compatible but well worth the time, trouble and stress

Those two errors will repeat until I cancel the setup.

You need to update to Solution Suite 2.0.1 with live update, the RIS option is broken in 2.0

Been using Ghost 7.5 for years but are slowly switching to Acronis Snap Deploy, and we've been pretty pleased with it so far..
