deploying office 2007 Professional Plus Through GPO

I have been trying all day and it did my head in,

 

I have tried to do a standalone setup of office 2007 to deploy via gpo but do you think i can do it, I run the Setup.exe /admin and it makes it like a patch which is applied through the setup.exe when that is run.

 

How can i send it out via GPO, which MSI can i customise to do it, can i do it by making an mst using the 2003 tookit?

 

Anyone else got any ideas, if not i will resort to sending it out through the AI bit of ghost.

Is there nothing in the deployment tools for it? Must admit i've only just got it on my machine today so not had time to even start thinking enterprise wide deploy yet.

It is information I have been trying to glean from Microsoft for the last 2 months ... I will be sitting down for a chat with a techie whilst at BETT and will try and get a set of instructions up onto the Wiki by the end of the week.

 

Darren and I were working on being early adopters of Vista and Office 2007 in our respective schools, but we have still not managed the rollout due to lack of time and lack of guidance. We will have various VM Ware setups whilst at BETT and this will be one of my targets to conquer.

Its things like this that make me think that my method of going around all the computers and running a setup program manually to install things seem like a good idea

 

Are people saying that MS - who make a server/client IT system and an Office productivity package do not issue a simple method of deploying it, over their own system out of the box?

 

Is this not madness?

 

I'd love to see a proper study of time taken to work out how to deploy something automatically vs time taken to just go and do it.

 

(And then take into account lack of stress and decide which is better in terms of work/person balance )

Usually you will see the deployment information on Technet ... the free section that anyone can get onto. They have change the site slightly now so it is not as evident where some of the stuff is (it use to have areas of planning, testing, deploying, managing and maintaining ... ) but this page gives a list of thinks to read about Ofice 2007.

 

It really is just a case of spending a huge chunk of time digging through *all* the articles to get the info you need ... and then writing it all down.

 

If I was to blog this as a project for next week would people be interested?

That looks very good to me as well, also on my CD there is an admin folder with a help file called OCT in it. That contains the info on customising Office 2007 for creating the relivent transforms etc...
