BassTech Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 Hi, I've just completed my new build and here are the specs: Asus GTX470 1280MB GDDR5 PCI-E Graphics Card Samsung HD103SJ 1TB Hard Drive - 7200rpm 32MB Cache (SATA) 8GB (4x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz RAM @ 1.65v AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8GHz 9MB Cache (AM3) Powercool 550W PSU Asus M4A785TD-V EVO 785G Motherboard Arctic Cooling CPU Freezer 7 Pro Samsung SH-B083L 8x Blu-Ray player Windows 7 Ultimate x64 The PC just randomly powers off, even when doing simple tasks such as browsing the net. I had to wait about 1 minute and then I could turn it back on but now it won't power on at all. I have tried taking out the graphics card and RAM but still no power. The motherboard has a green light so there is some power getting through. All the fans work fine as well. I think that the 550W PSU may not be capable of running my spec so I've ordered an 850W one. Is there anything I can try in the meantime to power my PC on? Many thanks, Lee

kmount Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 Removing the graphics card and using the onboard one should be fine with a 550W PSU. Unplug the Graphics Card, BluRay and run on a single stick of RAM to see if it fires up. I don't think it's quite as straight forward as not enough juice if even with the card removed it won't fire up.
synaesthesia Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 Being quite blunt, had you ordered a sensible graphics card that PSU would be plenty. However, being the most important part of the PC, it's best to stick with decent ones - PowerCool is not a manufacture I'd lump in teh "decent" bunch. Those particular Nvidia graphics cards are too power hungry as it is. But to the main issue - if it randomly powered down and won't turn back on, something's blown. Was the heatsink correctly attached? Any odd smells in the case? Take everything out of the case and run it separately to eliminate the possibility of electrical shorts on the case. Also definitely try and get hold of another PSU (even if it's vastly underpowered) to rule yours out. Did you have both PSU cables plugged into the main board? (24pin and 8pin) ?

Ironically, I was in the process of downloading this when it powered off I Haven't been able to turn it on since, however I checked the BIOS on first boot up and all the temps were fine, my new 850w PSU is coming tomorrow so hopefully that will bring the beasty back to life

For instance, a branded (i.e. corsair/seasonic, pcp&c etc) psu of 500w will be absolutely fine with that setup, whereas a 900w Q-Tec branded one will fall over and die, probably taking half of your PC with it.

BTW mobo temp sensors can be about 10deg off at times! There was quite a lot of thermal paste on the CPU, maybe a touch too much. Can too much cause it to power off?

I may remove the fan and re-paste it. The new PSU just came so I'll try that at first when I get home and I can't run any tests, it doesn't power on! but when I get it running again I shall test it to the ground

synaesthesia Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Power plugged into the graphics card? Also, you should only expect a picture from the card when it's plugged in as onboard will automatically disable.

Does it actually post when the GFX card is plugged in and connected correctly? ie the PC beeps like normal? Could be that the GFX card is faulty????
dwhyte85 Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Are you directly plugging into a socket or into a 4-way, or a 4-way plugged into a 4-way? I remember back in the day... my machine was lagging really bad (graphically) and finally, just powering down... it had something to do that my Xbox, TV, Room Conditioner & Music Amp were all plugged in , direct connection and it was OK.
