LOL, you jest - but I can actually count the number of calls I make/recieve in a month on 1 hand. SMS, e-mail and Facebook messages on the other hand...

The evolving world of human communications eh?

Yeh but in an emergency you cant change your facebook status to "Ambulance needed" and expect them to turn up ;)

..... you can send them a message requesting for help. Geolocation on smart phones could be used to advantage :)

Joking, and the obvious privacy implications, aside that would actually be really useful if you could call emergency services (Police,Ambulance, etc) and they then automatically had a way of tracking you from your phones GPS co-ordinates!

They can get a cell location and triangulate from antenna to aid in their search for last locations of mobile phones, which to be honest, is probably about as accurate as a cellphones GPS tag .. lol .. but it would be good to have an option like "Find My iPhone" for the Emergency Services so you can be tracked should the need arise ..

This is an option on a phone the AA were selling to customers a couple years ago, had a find me button on the phone, which then sent you membership number and co-ordinates to central control! but the phone was expensive and never took off

I knew triangulating the signal was possible but wasn't sure if the data was automatically passed onto emergency services in the event of calling them. Mind you it seems like such an useful/obvious thing when you think about that you'd assume there'd be something in place to allow it!

I've finally got a use for all those red elastic bands that postmen drop all over the pavements - they're the right size! A friend has just successfully solved his signal problems on his iPhone 4 by using the one I've given him!

Iphone Antenna problem? There is no iphone antenna problem!

You just need to hold it like this....... ;)

On a more serious note it's a disgraceful way for a company like Apple to act. My friends iphone can literally lose all signal if you just accidentally bridge the black gap between the antenna's. Very easy to accidentally do if you hold it in yhour left hand. No other phone on the market can be nerfed totally by simply touching a single point on it. The offer of a free bumper/case (not even an Apple branded one!) is a slap in the face to all their existing customers. The offer of a refund is worthless aswell since, if like 99% of folk, you've bought it on a contract you can only returned the (heavily subsidized) phone but are left paying an overpriced contract for the next 2 years.

Disappointed :(

Maybe the emergency services should have a Facebook or Twitter presence, so you can send them a message requesting for help. Geolocation on smart phones could be used to advantage :)

"Fire! Fire! Looking forward to hearing from you" 1 minute ago from here via Twitter for Android

Well don't forget when they had the fire on The IT Crowd and Moss e-mailed them about the fire and they came to it :p
