Mission Impossible...? Help needed

Hi

 

Our school has recently appointed a new teacher of ICT & Music, and she needs to teach a unit using a virtual piano keyboard similar to this - Virtual Piano : The original app | Virtual Keyboard | Online Music | Piano Game | CMAGICS Trouble is I need to record the audio from this so that they can transfer it to audacity and edit it. I have tried the inbuilt sound recorder in XP, but that does not work. I have also tried freecorder - Freecorder 4 but there is an option to modify the registry, which I obviously don't want the students using.

 

I have tried using this - virtualpiano - Project Hosting on Google Code but when you try and import the midi file into Audacity play it, Audacity throws out an error.

 

Basically the department has no money to spend and we are trying to do this on a complete shoe-string (daft I know). Does anyone know of a decent FREE sound recorder that would capture sound off the Internet?

Using the record facility in Audacity seems to work OK with that site.

 

With the other, you could play the midi and record the music, then edit in Audacity.

Yeah, just record direct to audacity

I have tried using the built in record function in audacity but still can't get it to work, what am I doing wrong?

Go to Edit>Preferences and check the correct sound devices are set (you may need to experiment). When set up, it's probably worth turning off system sounds whilst recording to prevent unwanted notification sounds.

Is it picking anything up? Go to Edit - preferences - recording - device and make sure it's not recording from a microphone (in 7 it shows as microsoft sound mapper - input)

Right my settings in Audacity are as follows: Playback set to Device: Realtek AC97 Audio, Recording set to Device: Micorosoft Sound Mapper - Input, Channels set to 2. I have tried all the other options (was set to Mic before).

Now try playing some music and click record, see if you get anything

Set recording devices on the sound applet in the bottom corner for your desktop to record "what you hear".

Make sure on the main screen its set to Stereo input not microphone, its a drop down box near to a microphone symbol and a slider for sound level.
