Is there a simple way to publish target & current grades directly to students?

We record all this assesment data and retrospectivley produce a report to parents,...well how about a web view to students in real time so that they can view and reflect on their current performance?

Is there already a solution to this, becuase i can't find one anywhere?

What you'll be wanting is SIMS Web Parts - how you get that depends largely on who provides your SIMS support, contact them and ask about it

SIMS Learning Gateway?

Same thing, it's "SIMS Learning Gateway with Web Parts", but I prefer to call it Web Parts because Learning Gateway is deceiving IMO

As pointed out the SIMS webparts are what you are looking for - they can do a lot more than just feeding back student data, but they are not cheap.

I could be wrong, but I don't think they sell them individually and you will have to buy the whole package. You will also need to be running sharepoint for the webparts to dispplay.

If you are using moodle, I believe there is something similar but I haven't seen it in action so can't comment on how good it is etc.

I think Sylv3r is spot on. They don't sell the web part seperately. In fact the Learning Gateway itself is nothing more than a series of web parts that integrate with SIMS. So to answer the OP's question, what they need to to do web based student reporting is the Learning Gateway. Either that or Capita have very recently seriously mis-sold us!

Sorry tmcd35, I weren't trying to say you were wrong, I just find "Learning Gateway" deceiving, it seems to imply a stand alone product, when in fact it's not, you need a VLE in place to host it

I think tasc software do a product called Insight (i think) that does it too.. well i've heard it does it now but before christmas it didnt but if it does it would be cheaper then setting up SLG.

From what the visitors who have come here to see SLG in action then the demo does not do it full justice!

That's a shame, as that's what most people see first! I'm shocked that Capita have half-heartedly made a big working advert for one of their products! :p

If you're not buying in to an online reporting solution (slg, insight, muffins at school, etc) another way would be to publish assessment individual reports or similar through a vle - that gives the info to students on a platform they already use.

Following on from the above, you could export the reports once all grade data is in, and then use a script to copy them to the users' area so they can access them. I don't see how giving them access to their grades online is different to the report you produce, if you make the report available to them. Is there a large time gap between the entry of grades and the resultant issuing of report?

We don't have much of a gap and the time is used to proof read any written part of the report and for HoDs to make sure the grading is okay.

If you do go down the SLG route, page 21 of SupportNet resource #13851 describes the webpart that will allow access to assessment data.

The best option for us was Tasc's INSIGHT, Cheaper than all most others ands really simple to use and intergates with Active Directory

To use the words Learning Gateway is deceiving, although I do not think Capita did it on purpose. SLG has no learning element ie SLK or moodle, it is merely a webbased cut down version of sims to give staff, students and families a view of data. It allows some writeback. I have just returned to education from a contract in the NHS working with a BI company. They certainly have the webparts, interaction for their data that schools could only marvel at. Mind you it was sharepoint 2010 connected to a OLAP cubes and sql
