We have just got one of these as it was recommended as capable of coping with a huge amount of traffic compared to our old core switch.

So far, it does seem very good

But Im having trouble finding out much about Extreme...I havent really heard much about them

Have we made a decent choice for a backbone switch? How much would you expect to pay for this switch?

The thing that has prompted me to make this post is that on Extremes site the switch has a 'Best of Show 99' award - and it made me wonder why we have a model that is 7 years old?

Sidewinder have you actually got this piece of kit ?

I was told that model is now obselete and went for an Allied Telesyn product far better and far cheaper !!!

We have indeed got it

We had Allied Teleysn before, a 9816 16 port GBIC switch but we easily outgrew that

The only solution AT could provide us was one of their Switchblades which would have been even more expensive than the Extreme. What have you got then?

I personally wanted to go for the HP 5400ZL as it would have given us SO much capacity but I was overruled for the Extreme unfortuantly

Not complaining though, its been a great piece of kit so far, just a bit obvious by looking on the net that its not exactly the latest and greatest

An extreme 7i will give you an insane amount of capacity. I'm sure the internal switching fabric is something silly, it certainly is for the 5i. Unless you're trying to push several thousand+ machines worth of traffic over it, you really shouldn't have any issues.

Extreme kit is more than capable and i'd certainly use it over allied. :)

Also, hi, 1st post etc. :)
